During the first half of 2022, IGG faced a period of significant financial contraction, reporting a net loss of HK$171.8 million compared to a profit of HK$577.3 million in the same period of 2021. Revenue declined 23% year-on-year to HK$2.49 billion, a downturn primarily attributed to the natural maturity of the company’s flagship title, Lords Mobile, alongside broader global economic headwinds. While core game operations managed to return to profitability by the second quarter, the overall bottom line was heavily impacted by impairment losses on associates and joint ventures, as well as a net loss within the company’s investment portfolio.
In response to these challenges, the company prioritized resource optimization, including headcount reductions and a strategic decrease in promotional and advertising expenditures. Despite these cost-management efforts, the board elected not to declare an interim dividend. Capital allocation remains focused on long-term infrastructure, evidenced by a rise in capital commitments to HK$470.5 million, largely driven by the construction of a self-use office facility in Fuzhou. The company also continues to utilize various share-based incentive schemes to retain key personnel, with significant portions of equity held by a core group of directors and senior management.
Operating across global markets, IGG maintains its presence in the People’s Republic of China through structured contracts with domestic entities to ensure compliance with foreign ownership regulations. These entities represent a minor portion of the group’s total revenue and assets, and the company continues to monitor these arrangements against evolving regulatory frameworks. Moving into the second half of the year, the strategic focus shifts toward revitalizing growth through increased marketing investment for new game launches, aiming to offset the decline of legacy titles and stabilize the company’s financial trajectory.
