The 2021 annual results for IGG, a global mobile game developer and publisher, detail a year of strategic transition characterized by increased investment in research and development alongside a significant decline in net profit. The company, which maintains a presence in over 200 countries and regions with a user base of approximately 1.3 billion, focused its 2021 efforts on expanding its R&D headcount and diversifying its product portfolio to ensure long-term growth.
Financially, the group reported revenue of HK$6.05 billion, an 11% increase over the previous year, driven primarily by the continued performance of its flagship title, Lords Mobile, and the growth of newer titles like Time Princess. However, net profit fell by 82% to HK$369.6 million. This sharp contraction was attributed to two primary factors: a 36% increase in selling and distribution expenses to support global marketing, and an 82% surge in R&D spending as the company expanded its development teams in Shanghai and Chengdu. Additionally, the company recorded a loss of HK$55 million on investments due to market volatility, contrasting with gains in the prior year.
The company’s operational strategy remains heavily reliant on Android platforms, which accounted for 67% of total revenue in 2021. With over two-thirds of its 3,000-strong workforce dedicated to R&D, IGG is prioritizing the development of new titles, such as Project Yeager and Project OG, to diversify its offerings beyond its core strategy and RPG segments. Despite the pressure on short-term profitability, the group maintains a strong cash position of approximately HK$1.95 billion, supporting its ongoing commitment to global expansion and product innovation.
