GungHo Online Entertainment
GungHo Online Entertainment’s consolidated financial results for the 2024 fiscal year reflect a period of contraction characterized by a 17.3% year-on-year decline in net sales, which totaled 103,600 million yen. This downturn was primarily driven by a reactionary sales decrease in the Ragnarok franchise, specifically following the strong performance of Ragnarok Origin in the previous year. Despite these challenges, the company maintained stable user engagement for its flagship title, Puzzle & Dragons, through consistent content updates, collaboration events, and anniversary celebrations.
Profitability metrics were significantly impacted by both lower top-line revenue and a 23.5% increase in selling, general, and administrative expenses. Operating profit fell by 37.3% to 17,491 million yen, resulting in an operating profit margin of 16.8%, down from 22.2% in the prior year. The rise in administrative costs was largely attributed to a 36.9% surge in advertising expenditures, aimed at supporting both existing titles and the launch of new products, alongside higher salary and allowance costs associated with an increased consolidated headcount of 1,583 employees.
The company’s geographic and segment scope remains focused on the global mobile and console gaming markets, with a heavy emphasis on the Japanese market for its core intellectual properties. During the fourth quarter, the company sought to bolster performance through the release of new titles such as Ragnarok X in Japan and various Ragnarok-related expansions in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. While these efforts contributed to a quarterly net sales increase of 4,287 million yen compared to the third quarter, the overall fiscal year concluded with a 32.0% decrease in profit attributable to owners of the parent, totaling 11,171 million yen.
