DeapSea: Workflow-Supported Serious Game Design for Stroke Rehabilitation
Key insights
6 takeaways- 01The DeapSea workflow provides a structured framework for stroke rehabilitation that enables therapists to actively configure and adapt serious game parameters to meet individual patient needs.See it on page 1
- 02Effective serious game design for rehabilitation requires seven core functional requirements, including the ability for therapists to create, assign, and randomize game levels while tracking patient performance results.See it on page 3
- 03The DeapSea framework identifies specific configuration possibilities—such as adjusting movement speed, interaction accuracy, and game difficulty—to tailor virtual exercises to a patient's specific motor recovery stage.See it on page 10
- 04Feedback from 15 surveyed therapists and healthcare professionals indicated a positive reception to the DeapSea workflow, noting its potential for integration into clinical practice despite concerns regarding the time required for setup.See it on page 11
- 05The research highlights that while game design elements and motivation are critical, the primary challenge in stroke rehabilitation games is bridging the gap between clinical requirements and technical implementation through therapist-in-the-loop interaction.See it on page 3
- 06The DeapSea methodology emphasizes a four-phase design process—initial idea, research, results, and evaluation—informed by the author's experience in developing over 60 serious games and gamified healthcare applications.See it on page 4
