Chzzk Streamers Prosper After Departing Twitch Following Korean Shutdown

The emergence of Chzzk, a live streaming platform developed by Naver, has significantly reshaped the South Korean digital landscape following the exit of Twitch from the region. The primary purpose of this analysis is to evaluate the platform's performance during its first full quarter of operation in early 2024. The findings indicate that Chzzk successfully captured a substantial portion of the displaced Twitch audience, effectively positioning itself as a primary competitor to the long-standing incumbent, AfreecaTV.

Data highlights show rapid initial adoption, with viewership increasing by 79% between the first and second weeks of tracked data in January 2024. By the end of the quarter, the platform reached 13.1 million hours watched and maintained a steady weekly growth rate of 2.6%. While AfreecaTV remains a dominant force with 117,000 weekly average viewers, Chzzk has closed the gap to within 35,000 viewers, demonstrating strong market penetration.

A notable finding is that creators migrating from Twitch to Chzzk experienced improved performance metrics. Among the top 10 creators on the new platform, 60% saw their average minute viewership (AMA) increase by over 100% compared to their performance on Twitch. One prominent creator saw an AMA increase of 324%, underscoring the platform's efficacy in retaining and engaging high-value audiences.
