Video games have historically relied on a narrow set of tropes when depicting transgender characters, frequently pathologizing gender identity through narratives centered on dysphoria, mental illness, or the "wrong-body" model. An analysis of 63 titles released between 1988 and 2019 reveals that early portrayals often utilized the "trans shock" trope, which framed trans identity as a deceptive or inherently violent trait. While the industry has gradually shifted toward more respectful characterizations, these depictions often remain limited by reliance on harmful stereotypes that equate transness with instability or social transgression.
The research identifies four primary patterns of representation: dysphoria-focused physical transition, the mentally ill killer archetype, the trans shock reveal, and gender ambiguity. Among these, gender ambiguity stands out as the most prevalent yet understudied form of representation, particularly within Japanese-developed role-playing games. In these instances, character identities are frequently left to player interpretation or significantly altered during the localization process. This trend suggests that the industry often prefers implicit, non-committal portrayals over explicit, holistic narratives that affirm a character’s trans identity.
Although there has been a measurable increase in trans-related content over the past three decades, the evolution of these portrayals remains uneven. While modern gaming is slowly aligning with contemporary understandings of gender, the reliance on ambiguity serves as a persistent barrier to authentic representation. Ultimately, the industry continues to prioritize subtle or coded gender non-conformity over the development of nuanced, explicitly transgender characters, indicating that while progress is occurring, the integration of diverse gender identities into mainstream gaming remains an incomplete and often stereotypical process.
