On PlayStation, the top 100 titles account for approximately 84% of all DAU, while on Xbox, the top 100 titles represent 76%. In contrast, Steam demonstrates a more distributed ecosystem, where the top 100 games account for less than 60% of total DAU. This concentration on consoles is largely driven by long-standing live service games and annual sports franchises, which dominate the top rankings and create high barriers to entry for new intellectual property.
The analysis further quantifies the difficulty of achieving commercial success for new releases on consoles. In 2024, only 2.6% of new Xbox releases and under 5% of PlayStation releases surpassed 100,000 lifetime units, excluding subscription-based downloads.
