Create free accountyou'll notice this is their date um normally people put coming soon or 2022 2023 whatever the data they just put the date turns out there's no like text limit on here so this guy just wrote like something that's longer than the short description this is this is wild steam's probably gonna button this down if this gets out of hand but why not why not try it uh you can do it um and the reason they did that so when weird things happen um when you get the little widget that tells people like oh should we uh wishlist this game or something that does that wish wishlist widget it shows the date in there so you get a little short description but uh this was carlos c over on the discord pointed out that when you do the hover tool tip look what it shows it shows this text because typically the hover tool tip will show the date they have the whole description there in the wild so if you want to get some free text into your hover tool tip because the hover tool tip doesn't show your short description hey this is a cool little hack so until steam figures
out put a lot of text and you're coming soon information like when you release it is it shows up weird so who knows what the limit is that's kind of why i did it you
Steam store pages allow developers to bypass standard character limitations in the release date field, providing a strategic opportunity to increase game visibility. By inputting extensive descriptive text into the field typically reserved for a release date or year, developers can force additional information into high-traffic areas of the platform. This technique effectively exploits the way Steam’s interface renders data, ensuring that custom text appears in the wishlist widget and, more importantly, within the hover tooltip that appears when users interact with a game listing.
Because the standard hover tooltip does not display a game’s official short description, this workaround serves as a functional hack to provide potential players with immediate context or marketing copy. While the platform currently lacks a strict character limit for this specific field, the practice remains an unconventional method for capturing user attention before Steam potentially implements stricter validation or formatting constraints.
This approach highlights a broader trend in indie game marketing where developers leverage platform UI quirks to maximize information density. Although the long-term viability of this tactic is uncertain, it currently offers a low-cost, high-impact method for developers to differentiate their store presence. By prioritizing visibility in the hover tooltip, developers can communicate key selling points or release information directly to shoppers who might otherwise overlook a title based on a standard date entry.
