Create free accounti challenged you to create video games where failure is progress you had just 72 hours to make your games you submitted over 1000 games and in this video we'll see what you came up with you made racing games where the goal is to go as slowly as possible power defense games where you can only place healing turrets and much much more can failure be fun get ready to be inspired and stick around for the top 10 games later in this video one of my personal favorites of the gem is kamika ruga it starts out like a pretty classical top down shooter but it has a twist every time you lose a life you deal absolutely massive damage so much so that oftentimes you pretty much want to get hit but also not to a degree where getting hit is always a good idea short it's a game where you have to be quite strategic about when and where you want to get hit pretty clever the theme i gave you for this game gym was failure is progress there were a lot of different ways to approach this topic in just wash you're trying to get fired from your car wash job mostly by messing up the car as
much as possible before the timer runs out in don't die you learn a new ability every time you die but if you die seven times you lose and you have to start over that gives you some nice risk reward where sometimes dying is a good thing and sometimes it's not i also challenged you to mess with the concepts of winning and losing and i'm happy to report that you did exactly that in the game ward you unlock a new ability depending on how you die but you can only have one ability at a time so you have to choose quite carefully how you want to die a very cool idea and i think it still has a lot of untapped potential there's a new genre of games the body platform genre in a body platformer you use your dead or deactivated bodies as platforms actually i really like the fact that so many of you went for the same idea because that really shows that having the same idea doesn't make for the same game at all a spell to live for has an amazing art style and i love this little puzzle here [Music] where you have to use your own body as a shield and meet your maker you're playing a little meatball once again making platforms for yourself but with a twist that you have to cook yourself exactly once not twice otherwise you're
burned snake fize applies the same concept to a snake bird like puzzle game which i thought was pretty smart but turns out your previous bodies can also have different perks for example being a source of light it's a pretty nice feeling to know that every death brings you a little closer to victory oh that's so cool i think if i died had died down there a couple more times we could see an ocean of lights down there now you can find the full playthrough of all 60 games i played on my second channel and getting under it the goal is reaching the bottom instead of reaching the top and sprout of dying at the correct places will permanently change the level you'll create tunnels and new leaves to jump on we've got a top-down shooter where dying will create a clone of yourself that reenacts everything you did before you died so you can fight alongside your former selves the last guy is a parkour game about dodging women from mars and what the goal figuring out what the goal is is the goal if you take away one thing from this video it should be the fact that failure and success don't have to be these static events at the end of gameplay they can also be interconnected systems and be part of gameplay in a normal game whenever you fail that means you have to try again until you
eventually succeed and as a reward you're allowed to continue to the next section of the game where the entire cycle starts over this architecture makes a lot of sense because it gives players a sense of progression and mastery but we should still dare to challenge these norms every once in a while the gameplay of unicorn is pretty fun but the fascinating part about this one is definitely the progression system whenever you lose you still advance to the next level and if you manage to win you'll advance to the next row of levels but be careful if you reach the end of a row you'll have to start over in checkpoint to die your objective changes as soon as you reach a checkpoint before the checkpoint your goal is to survive after the checkpoint your goal is to die and both can be challenging at times could you get me something to eat and whatever it is make sure it has cheese and if you could while you want your pizza grab me a slice of delicious pizza also seems like some of you had a little too much fun making their games now you're probably saying wow you've done quite a lot yeah you would think that if this was done in the first two days but this is the third day and it's 11 p.m colosseum is a gladiator
fight where the goal is not to win but to entertain the audience very cool idea and you know at least you uploaded something so yeah good job dinan then had the idea to make the game like a quiz show where getting the wrong answers would take you down different paths and annoy the narrator such an easy survey just answer the questions normally it's almost like you think this is some sort of game i find it pretty incredible how much you can do with just a little bit of text and clever writing an android negotiator you're trying to defuse a hostage situation where you learn some new information every time you fail and don't get the job your job is to not get the job what is the most challenging decision you had to make recently getting out of bed this morning the only problem is they really want to give you the job and you're faced with different executives who all have different personalities and preferences in a date with death you're trying to get a date with that unfortunately death has different plans for you so he keeps reviving you with more and more superpowers to make sure you don't come back
[Music] i have absolutely no clue how you managed to make such great looking games in such a short amount of time the fascinating thing about this one here is that it's pretty much just the lighting that makes it so incredibly moody now where are you going it feels like portal but i'm just stopping and looking at the beautiful textures though you also made some kick-ass puzzle games like this one here where getting crushed is the only way to get rid of wall blocks a cute little game about cars that can drive on top of each other i would totally pay for this game so please make more and musculus your movement is recorded and when you play again the rats repeat their movement which makes for some surprisingly tricky puzzles treasure hunt is a puzzle game where you have to try not to find the treasure maxi container is an amazingly polished word building game where your score multiplier increases every time you don't build a world very surprising how well that works in terms of game balance and i wanna die the goal is to lose all of your health which is not as easy as it sounds i really like the
simplicity of this one and in alien chess you can only make moves you've seen your opponent make so you will have to fail a couple of times just to figure out how the game works you know what's always cool in a video game a fun surprise [Music] okay i'm back we somehow seem to be locked in here oh so now i left the level at the top [Laughter] another really fun one you're a cat that is home alone and of course your goal is to destroy absolutely everything absolutely don't fire the cannon don't worry i'm not gonna this architecture is not the only thing that's starting to get a little stale in video games in my opinion the same thing also applies to the things that make you win and the things that make you lose aka winning and losing conditions don't get me wrong i'm not saying every game has to reinvent the wheel i'm just saying
there's a lot of untapped potential here like this racing game where you have to finish as slowly as possible but lose some health every time you bump into a wall or this tower defense game where enemies automatically lose health and the goal is to keep them alive and these don't feel like cheap gimmicks to me they really feel like they could make for great games and bloody gladiators you get new objectives for every level like dying from fall damage no problem let me see what else did i play best percent is a speed running game where you have to die and turn into a ghost in order to complete the level four corners is another minimalist speedrunning game that embraces the concept of failure is progress because enemies are permanently removed if you crash into one red handed is a stealth game where you can stay invisible for as long as you want to and even walk through doors without being noticed the challenge lies in clever planning and execution trash quest feels like a fully finished metroidvania absolutely mind-boggling that you manage to finish this in such a short amount of time whenever you die you drop a little health pick up that you can collect later on which i thought was a pretty cute idea i played mini golf in space a cute little platformer about haiku the robot who apparently has a full game coming to steam as well very
cool best of luck with that i played a horror game called blenderman an fps with awesome momentum-based movement an exploration game where you need to find all the ways to die and another samurai fighting game where the goal is to die with honor now before we dive into the top 10 it is time for your favorite segment bonus challenge i'll press on this random game button five times the best game will winner will you snail steam key what is will you snail you are asking oh it's just that cute little platform i've been working on for three years you are a snail and i am a god capable of predicting every move you will make too easy and the first game with a chance of winning will you snail for free is icicle hit the controls are so you can just tap the keyboard for a very brief moment okay okay i think i'm figuring starting to figure out the controls the next game is jumping robot okay let's try it out hold on whoa that's a floaty jump [Music] very cool character model very
interesting jump animation [Music] well i can jump so far crazy crazy the next game is and now i can go through the red now i can go through the blue and that's it maybe i need to eat my own red tail i mean it's not directly failures progress i guess but it's inspired by failures progress and it's fairly interesting the next game is wow the game click me okay so i decided to redo game number four and it was a platformer about escaping prison where the goal is to wake up all of the guards on your way out which i thought was pretty funny game number five was a pretty fun one as well but also a very short one so i decided to go for another one the last and final game with a chance of winning will you snail for free is i don't want to do these
dumb tests i'm going to destroy everything instead so what happens if i throw all of the boxes in the pit here that'll show these humans yeah you lose nice okay now there's the exit but we don't want to go to the exit you lose whoo and the winner of this year's bonus challenge has to be aura so please get in touch i'll send you your steam key you can win some free will you snail keys as well simply by dropping a like and leaving a comment down below i'll pick some comments at random you know making a video like this is a lot of effort so if you want to make it worth my while please consider tickling that wishlist button on steam just give it a little tickle tickle tickle especially if you're interested that would be just super appreciated of them in fact okay but the waiting finally has an end now it's time for the top 10 games of game gem 3.0 these top 10 haven't been decided by me you voted on the top 10
let's start out slow and easy with your number 10 reaper repeat by vim lark white vault and droopy it looks amazing holy and it's one of those you die you turn into a block kind of thing but super polished oh my oh my this feels so satisfying and collecting the ghost unlocks the door i was hesitant to use this mechanic because i was sure that so many other people were gonna use the same concept in their games i was right because we used a very common concept that doesn't mean that we can't put our own spin on it and you did manage to put an absolutely awesome spin on it because how you die determines what advantage you get from it in this case for example you need to create two bubbles to get to the other side [Music] in other levels you have to put yourself on fire to burn through boxes great idea great execution great art great music what else do you really want for a game jam game well deserved 10th by the way that i already mentioned you can try out all of these games yourself if you want
to for our number nine we have another pretty smart one apex by dr manatee michael grissoff and nikita in this game you're a little spidery creature and start out right next to the final boss fight of the game which unfortunately you can't beat yet so you go out into the world collect these little dna snippets and then you find new ways to die the creature drowned all generations from now on will be able to swim so once again the upgrade you get depends on how you die and at the end you return back to the boss fully stacked with upgrades this time [Music] the boss room even fills up with water after a while to make sure you even need the swimming upgrade such a round experience and it's really satisfying to finish well deserved 9th place [Music] yes daisy's quest but i am making riptide nebora and britishness yet another body platformer should have seen that coming for this topic what makes
this one stand out is the fabulous art and the quirky funny characters that make you instantly fall in love with the game it has just enough story to really make you care about what's happening on the screen very awesome submission number seven is respawn by blazer a game where you can essentially throw the checkpoint and then of course whenever you die you respawn at checkpoint helping you to reach places you couldn't reach otherwise [Music] it's a very cool concept and it doesn't overstay its welcome so very well deserved 7th place number 6 surprised me a little bit to be honest the game is called loosened by maxi mana in this game you play as the bad guy who can place the traps and when you hit play the player starts moving and when he loses you win the game is pretty short and the polish is not quite on the same level as the other top 10 finishers however i think the awesome idea more than makes up for it it was very fun to play so congrats to a surprising yet well-deserved sixth place game number five might be by someone you recognize the idea for necrobomb came very quickly an undead creature dying and having that death
failure mean something more than game over was extremely satisfying to think about having spent many hours playing spelunky and wibbly witches of late destructible terrain was something i was eager to explore and i have to say noah really got his game gym game figured out at this point he came up with an absolutely awesome multi-purpose mechanic when you die you explode destroying absolutely everything around you then you turn into a ghost who can fly around for a couple of seconds so one single mechanic is used to destroy the terrain and as a weapon and to move around when an enemy touches you while you're in your ghost form you lose and have to restart the level the game feel and polish are just amazing there's even a little boss fight at the end really really really good submission game number four proves that you don't have to do anything complicated for winning one of the top spots in a game gem don't die by mixer is a minimalist platformer where you have to die after collecting all of the coins in a level if you die before that you lose and have to try again it's a very simple idea but the controls feel great the colors look nice i would say simplicity at its finest
and we're down to the top three this one is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion down in the fifth round by jake ellis it looks like a very normal boxing fighting game thingy but it's not toss and this one you lose when you knock out your opponent and you also get some additional objectives in every round in this round you get 25 bucks for punching and 100 every time you take damage in a different round you could get 200 for damaging your opponent but minus 50 every time you block a hit this way every round feels different and you have to switch up your play style all the time this is it bub this round let the other guy knock you out and you'll get your money there's a nice bonus if you cut it close the controls are super simple you can just attack and block yet the game has unbearable amounts of tension really really good submission i love this one [Music] number two bad luck cat by shadow sora and bluetooth this is just a cute little arcade game where the goal is to cross the street without getting run over by a car or so i thought until i figured out
you could do this so yeah the cars actually try to dodge you and your goal is to cause as much chaos as possible it's a very cool surprise and it has a lot of factor when you finally figure it out so congrats for a well-deserved second place by the way last year we made a very similar video with the topic intentional box so if you want more after this one you know where to look and here comes the number one the best one out of one thousand games the over by 890. when i saw this i was a little confused why i voted this game out of all games onto the first place but then i played it every time you die you get a temporary upgrade for this level easier difficulty invincibility frames lower gravity slower game speed smaller spike hit boxes so basically the more you die
the easier the level gets but listen up because heroes where it gets really cool if you manage to beat a level with less than the allowed amount of depths you get a permanent upgrade and generally speaking these are a lot more desirable they allow you to double jump wall jump and much much more which kind of puts you into a situation where dying is good but not dying is good as well now that is a very interesting concept i definitely haven't seen before and therefore confirm you as the first place finisher of game jam 3.0 i hope you're happy and i want to thank everybody who participated in this awesome event if you're in the top 10 or in any other way eligible to a will you snail steam key please reach out and i hope to see you all in the next one [Music] you
The Wowie Jam 3.0 game development competition challenged participants to create video games centered on the theme "failure is progress." Over the course of 72 hours, developers submitted more than 1,000 entries, demonstrating that failure and success do not have to be static, binary outcomes. Instead, the event highlighted how these concepts can be integrated as interconnected systems within gameplay, challenging traditional industry norms that prioritize linear progression and mastery.
The entries spanned various genres, including platformers, puzzle games, and shooters, often utilizing mechanics where death or failure triggers new abilities, environmental changes, or strategic advantages. Notable examples included games where players use their own deceased characters as platforms, titles that reward players for intentionally taking damage, and projects that invert standard objectives, such as attempting to lose a job or finish a race as slowly as possible. The diversity of submissions proved that a shared core concept can lead to vastly different creative executions, ranging from minimalist designs to highly polished, complex mechanics.
The top-ranked games were selected through community voting, with the winning entry, "The Over," earning recognition for its dual-progression system. In this game, dying provides temporary, immediate assistance to clear a level, while completing levels with fewer deaths grants permanent, more desirable upgrades. This creates a compelling risk-reward dynamic that forces players to balance the benefits of failure against the long-term advantages of success. The event served as a showcase for independent developers to experiment with unconventional game design, proving that subverting traditional win-loss conditions can lead to innovative and engaging player experiences.
