Key insights

6 takeaways

01
Voice-based interaction with LLM-driven NPCs significantly outperforms text-based interaction in driving player immersion and engagement, as evidenced by higher scores in Emotional Involvement and Focused Attention.See it on page 5
02
In a 6-minute detective game prototype, dialogue modality (voice vs. text) served as a more immediate and impactful design variable than NPC persona.See it on page 3
03
The study found no statistically significant differences in player experience between 'Empathic/Supportive' and 'Low-Empathy/Task-focused' NPC personas, likely due to the brief duration of the test scenarios.See it on page 5
04
There was no significant interaction effect between persona and modality, suggesting that the engagement benefits of voice-based communication are stable and independent of the NPC's personality.See it on page 5
05
Researchers utilized OpenAI's GPT-4.1-mini to generate real-time, context-aware NPC dialogue, maintaining a consistent temperature setting of 0.7 to balance creativity and coherence.See it on page 3
06
Future research suggests that persona-driven impacts on player experience may require longer, sustained interactions—potentially 20 to 30-minute sessions or multi-day gameplay—to become statistically perceptible.See it on page 5
