THQ Nordic
It marks THQ Nordic's first development hub in Finland.
THQ Nordic AB expanded its global development footprint in November 2018 by acquiring a 90% stake in Helsinki-based Bugbear Entertainment, with an option to purchase the remaining 10% in the future. This strategic acquisition integrates a specialized developer known for high-fidelity, physics-based racing simulations into THQ Nordic’s portfolio. The deal grants THQ Nordic full ownership of Bugbear’s intellectual property, most notably the successful Wreckfest franchise and Stuntfest, while establishing the company’s first development hub in Finland.
The acquisition is driven by the strong commercial performance of Wreckfest, which emerged as THQ Nordic’s most successful title on Steam following its June 2018 release. With over 400,000 units sold and positive critical reception, the franchise serves as a cornerstone for future growth. The purchase price was calculated based on approximately three years of estimated royalty savings, reflecting the long-term value of internalizing development costs for a studio with two decades of experience in the racing genre.
Bugbear Entertainment brings a scalable team of 18 core developers, including veterans of the FlatOut series, who possess proprietary technology and expertise in both game design and development outsourcing. The roadmap for the studio focuses on leveraging existing IPs to launch console versions of Wreckfest in 2019 and developing new content and sequels. By securing this studio, THQ Nordic aims to capitalize on the high user engagement and replayability inherent in Bugbear’s racing titles, ensuring a steady pipeline of content for PC and console platforms in the years following the acquisition.
