The paper "The One Billion Dollar Myth" contends that the widely cited $1.1 billion figure for 2019 esports market size, attributed to Newzoo, substantially understates the industry because it omits publisher direct-to-consumer revenue, player salaries, and prize pools. The authors propose a broader six-sector "Entire Esports Ecosystem" framework and arrive at a 2019 market estimate of roughly $24.9 billion, with Game Publishers accounting for about 64 percent of that total and Teams, Professionals, and Streamers for about 17 percent. Their model frames value flows between players and viewers, driven by the conversion probabilities P(Watch|Play) and P(Play|Watch), and derives a viewer-to-player conversion rate of roughly 6.6 to 7 percent from advertising, sponsorship, and per-player spending data.
Sector-level estimates for 2019 place Streaming Platforms at approximately $2.41 billion, physical product firms at about $1.42 billion, Digital Tools at around $840 million, and Leagues and Tournaments at only about $144 million. The distribution of value is thus heavily weighted toward publishers and platforms rather than the event organizers that dominate popular perception of the sector.
The authors are candid that their figures rest on considerable assumptions. Viewership for 2019 is extrapolated, several spending inputs date from 2016 to 2018, a Pareto-based approximation is used for long-tail game revenue, and proxies such as Steam Workshop revenue and an assumed set of three major leagues stand in for direct measurement. Gambling revenue is explicitly excluded. Consequently, the $24.9 billion headline should be understood as a provisional, discussion-oriented estimate that highlights methodological blind spots in narrower market sizing rather than as an established benchmark. The paper's geographic scope is global, and its reference base draws on team economics, streaming monetization, and industry reports from Newzoo and SuperData.
