Modern Times Group
Modern Times Group demonstrated financial resilience in the first quarter of 2015, achieving total sales of 3,701 million SEK, representing a 2.9 percent increase over the same period in the previous year. This growth was primarily driven by robust performance within the Pay-TV Nordic and Emerging Markets segments, which successfully offset persistent declines in Scandinavian free-TV operations. Operating income before associated company income and non-recurring items rose to 142 million SEK, bolstered by improved operational efficiencies and the absence of significant non-recurring costs associated with the prior year’s Winter Olympics.
The company’s international expansion remains tempered by complex macroeconomic and regulatory environments. While the Emerging Markets Pay-TV segment recorded 22 percent sales growth at constant exchange rates, profitability in these regions faced downward pressure from currency volatility and geopolitical instability, particularly in Ukraine. Furthermore, restrictive new mass media laws in Russia have necessitated a fundamental restructuring of the company’s business interests in that market, which must be completed by the end of 2015. These external headwinds contributed to a net loss in comprehensive income of 104 million SEK for the quarter.
Despite these challenges, the organization continues to prioritize a strategic shift toward digital transformation, evidenced by ongoing capital investment in the Viaplay streaming service and the divestment of non-core assets such as Sappa. The board’s decision to increase the annual dividend to 11.00 SEK per share underscores a commitment to shareholder value and confidence in the group’s underlying financial stability. Moving forward, the company remains focused on balancing its digital evolution with the management of significant regulatory and currency-related risks across its diverse geographic footprint.
