Kakao Games
Kakao Games reported a challenging financial performance for the fourth quarter of 2024, characterized by a decline in revenue and a shift to an operating deficit. Total quarterly revenue reached 160.1 billion KRW, representing a 21.4% decrease year-over-year and a 17.4% decline quarter-over-quarter. This downturn was primarily driven by the absence of new title launches, the natural aging of legacy game portfolios, and a seasonal slowdown in non-gaming business segments.
The company recorded an operating loss of 6.3 billion KRW for the quarter, a significant departure from the 15.1 billion KRW operating profit reported in the same period of the previous year. Net income also remained in deficit at 102.3 billion KRW, impacted by one-off losses recognized during year-end impairment reviews of investment assets. While operating expenses were reduced by 11.7% year-over-year to 166.3 billion KRW—aided by efficient marketing management and lower commission fees linked to decreased revenue—these cost-saving measures were insufficient to offset the revenue contraction.
The financial results reflect a consolidated view of the company’s operations, including subsidiaries, and account for the classification of certain business units as discontinued operations. Looking ahead, the company has outlined a robust pipeline of new titles scheduled for release between the second quarter of 2025 and the end of 2026. This upcoming portfolio includes a diverse mix of genres such as action RPGs, looter shooters, and MMORPGs, spanning mobile, PC, and console platforms, as the company seeks to revitalize its growth trajectory following a difficult fiscal year.
