GungHo Online Entertainment
GungHo Online Entertainment’s third-quarter fiscal year 2023 financial results highlight a strategic pivot toward global market expansion and the diversification of its mobile-centric portfolio. The company’s primary objective is to increase its international presence by leveraging its established intellectual properties, such as the Ragnarok series and Puzzle & Dragons, while simultaneously developing new titles for console, PC, and mobile platforms.
Financial performance during the third quarter reflected a year-over-year increase in net sales, driven largely by the performance of Gravity’s Ragnarok-related titles. However, both consolidated net sales and operating profit experienced a quarter-over-quarter decline, attributed to a reactionary decrease following the strong second-quarter launch of Ragnarok Origin in Southeast Asia. Additionally, the company noted that increased sales contributions from Gravity led to a rise in the overall cost of sales.
The company’s global strategy is supported by a multi-platform approach, including the continued operation of Ninjala on the Nintendo Switch and the ongoing development of Deathverse: Let It Die. Domestically, the company remains focused on sustaining the longevity of Puzzle & Dragons through regular updates, competitive eSports events, and the upcoming release of Puzzle & Dragons Story on Apple Arcade, which is slated for a global launch across 150 countries.
Geographically, the company has successfully grown its overseas net sales ratio, which reached 65% in the first three quarters of 2023. This shift underscores a transition from a Japan-centric revenue model to a more balanced global distribution strategy. Future growth is expected to be fueled by new pipelines for console and PC gaming, alongside continued investment in eSports tournaments to foster engagement among younger demographics in North America, Japan, and Southeast Asia.
