[Music] hey guys my name is felipe i am the 3d artist here at thomas studio and also an art coach in full time game dev today i want to show you how i approach making 3d game characters and give you three tips to elevate your skills even further the first tip is start with a good frame and everything that is elemental to your design study your reference as much as possible as it's important to keep that silhouette consistent throughout the creation process once the blocking stage is nailed then you can move on to the details and everything that makes this character even more unique and interesting oh and make sure to save and keeping backup copies of your stage progress second tip is do the research on the art style that inspired your concept art
with cuphead we have that 20s era aesthetic to the cartoons and animation and it definitely doesn't hurt to look up different ideas that were orbiting around that time that's going to improve your execution and fidelity and it will also add more content to your own library of ideas and creations it's always fun to walk down a path and finding the trail of that original artist along the way and you can start making the same connections that they probably did the last one is ask for feedback now i know it sounds like a cliche but i think it's safe to assume that most artists wouldn't have become what they did without some peer advice me included and even more important learn to filter what's your personal preference and what's really constructive and technical to your work this is a constant learning process but one that you shouldn't miss you need to get your art out there because we are our worst judges [Music]

Achieving high-quality stylized character models in 3D requires a disciplined workflow that balances technical precision with deep historical research. The foundational stage of character creation relies on establishing a strong frame and maintaining a consistent silhouette. By prioritizing the blocking phase before introducing intricate details, artists ensure that the core design remains readable and structurally sound. Maintaining regular backups throughout this process is essential to safeguarding progress and allowing for iterative experimentation.
Beyond technical execution, successful stylized modeling demands a thorough investigation into the source material’s artistic origins. When emulating specific aesthetics, such as the 1920s cartoon style exemplified by Cuphead, artists should immerse themselves in the cultural and visual context of that era. This research-driven approach improves fidelity and helps creators understand the original artistic intent, ultimately expanding their own creative repertoire and allowing them to make more informed design choices that resonate with the intended style.
Continuous improvement is further facilitated by actively seeking peer feedback, which serves as a critical tool for professional growth. Because artists often struggle to maintain objectivity regarding their own work, external critiques provide necessary perspective. The key to this process is developing the ability to distinguish between subjective personal preferences and objective, constructive technical advice. By consistently exposing work to external review, artists can refine their skills and overcome the limitations of self-judgment, ensuring their character models meet professional industry standards.
