Create free accounthey today i'll show you how to make a game gem you start out with a little bit of game development put in some creativity then you mix the time pressure with the stress and mix it all together steer it well keep steering oh there was a bug okay let's just fill it up with crunch and sleepless nights instead that's the game gem experience the more game jams i participate in the more i feel like the same events keep repeating over and over again tons of parallax work uh i didn't that has been cancelled out it's like a deja vu and here's how it goes so i had this really awesome game idea this morning till everything's completely destroyed yeah so that's my game idea well
i can't imagine that okay let me explain it again [Music] yeah someone goes in here and yeah that's my game i do uh i can't imagine how that will play though checkmate so we have to go for something different well i would make the argument that if we can come up with an interesting mining game that's different from like the standard mining game everybody else will make that's fine as well yeah so my my concern with mining game is like that is the thing that i don't want to make so i would say that the underwater theme is something that really quite excites me like i would be glad to do something in it standard mining game but you don't play one dude you play few plays basically after you place it you have no control over it so so for example the drill just goes down until it breaks cool idea i
quite like that one but then what do you think do you think that's too close to a classical mining game or because i was hoping for some kind of big twist on it okay our ideation phase has taken two hours and i feel like feel like we need to come to a decision hi i brought you the books you were asking for what books my favorite gem recipes ah for your gym no i'm participating in a game jam oh a game time i'm curious to taste that it's an online event i have 72 hours to make a game with my friends while hundreds of people all around the world do the same you have friends i think we should learn from our last gem and make a really small game this time you know just keep it extremely small so we can just polish the crap out of it yeah that sounds reasonable i mean i
have a very extremely simple idea for a game here you you're a fish and you just have to reach the bottom of the ocean oh that sounds simple enough nice huh you know i thought now that we're making such a simple game concept that should give us plenty of lean way to add all of the little details we want right yeah i really want to have at least like 10 different enemies to keep it interesting yeah good idea and now that we're making such a simple game i think we should have more than enough time to add a story to it as well right oh do you think we'll have time for voice acting yeah of course i mean we're making a very simple game after all in fact i think it's so simple that we'll even have time to add a boss fight to it as well probably cool ah i already sketched out this giant level um do you think we'll have time to make cutscenes definitely our game is so simple we'll absolutely have time to make cutscenes ah that's great so what if we make some giant creatures sea mines some secrets then we'll need a ton of cool sound
effects you know yeah no problem we're making a very simple game i would be very interested in seeing what we can like what what happens if we go for a very simple very safe idea and just try to make it as good as possible that also sounds interesting to me we can just focus on polishing i think that's why the bottom one has some pull for me of one monster in this game that could be really cool is about a giant fish uh with teeth like that there if there's and in the beginning some dialogue with the dialogue what happens when you lose because i feel like we need checkpoints yeah for sure so basically the boss fight the second half of the boss fight is inside of the boss or how would that yeah it would be inside exactly i think this might just be my opinion that we should actually make a whole a world set in the sky as well thanks for letting me participate in your game jam i brought the usb stick
so we can synchronize the project oh you don't need that we're using unity collab all you need is an internet connection oh that sounds easy it's easy right yeah totally don't worry so i updated it and oh the reference script on the behavior game object player is missing can i use my i'll just use my scene if that's fine with you oh no i accidentally branched the fork uh have you tried doing a force commit pull cleaner push cleaner push push pull fork hey i just collapsed the new scene let me update no now all of my changes are gone that means if we have the collab problems now that means we won't have it later yes exactly i'm not sure what you have
because your version shouldn't even be working yet i'm not sure what you're playing oh okay maybe okay i i'll commit my mind back now with the name mindbug oh yeah that's great i've been looking forward to that i like your games i like that it has an interesting did you say something [Music] guys did you hear me yes oh you can hear me okay so i'm not muted i thought my microphones music [Music] so what are you doing right now oh um i'm testing really what are you testing uh i don't know if everything works i guess okay maybe you could you know implement
the checkpoints next or something like that sure as soon as i'm done playing testing [Music] being useless is so fun yay i'll spend some time staring at the screen doing absolutely nothing for a while if that's fine with you okay and why don't you just take a break are you crazy you know how unproductive brakes are while me and jonas doodle away [Music] give me the shower [Music]
i haven't seen anyone do that man unity feels so clunky all of a sudden what happened it's really annoying that unity has all these loading bars coming up all the time yeah it's pretty annoying i think we should take it very easy this time yeah no all nighters i'm thinking i'll be working from like 11 a.m till 4 p.m or something like that ah that sounds good no need to stress out about anything i'll go for two hour drinking water break now but hey um i'll head over to disneyland real quick and i'll talk to you in eight hours to be honest all of these breaks made me really tired i think maybe i should take a little break from all of these breaks you know come on give me a break
i'm doing my sleeping break shut up uh we're going to have a lunch break though now a little lunch break as i i said uh lunch break sounds really good to me i'm ready to to eat something as well so yes get some energies nice very cool yeah yeah we're gonna go for a little lunch break okay i'll take a little break now and go for a run we'll be going for a break around four ish to do some exercise but then we'll be back behind vm uh this evening it's 6 p.m now we have till three in the morning to finish this up let's get started crunching all night long i'm so motivated all of a sudden let's go yeah i think we should just upload the game the way it is now i mean we can still finish it after the gem if we want and in fact i'm going to bed right now so bye
bob you'll stick around right yes i will stay awake till the game is done okay awesome let's go let's go let's go [Music] guys we're going in for an all nighter here actually i feel like we might need to put in quite a few hours uh if we're going to get this game done by tomorrow yeah the good news is i'm not tired yet by the way yeah did you work till three in the morning almost yesterday ah no longer oh geez what are you doing [Music] guys i've been stuck on this box since the beginning don't worry we're making very good progress here i'm stuck i can't do anything i know i'm telling you for the 100th time i'm so frustrated oh you want me to help you why didn't you say so well
after the 10th time i'm complaining about taking your bets now will the minds work or will they not um i think they won't work probably okay first i think yeah it's the first time i'm trying them okay so i think they won't work yeah the mine did not work by the way not that close ah classic i used on collision enter instead of on collision enter 2d [Music] off every time yeah everyone writes shane jonas shame jonas yet shame oh man this game will be so bad when it's done yeah the gameplay doesn't really feel as great as i imagined maybe the reason why it isn't any fun are the restrictions we put on the movement of the fish yeah i think you're right i think we should embrace those restrictions even more and make sure there are even more cool downs like the fish is even harder to control
yeah we can try that but we won't be able to finish on time anyway so oh well it was a great learning experience i guess [Music] i'm just concerned that this is a very ambitious adventure right now yeah i think we overscoped big time what's your next task after this jonas uh crying in the corner ah that's my favorite activity we still have two hours left so no need to panic i'll just add another little secret over here one hour later one hour remaining it's time to panic first quick
oh my god we almost forgot to publish oh yikes okay is it published now how do we know how do you know it's published i know it's published unpublished game what that's i don't know that's slightly concerning and all right time to go to bed is submitted awesome really cool that there are no bugs this time around people actually like this mess we made yeah actually seems like it i mean some people probably write only nice things because they want somebody to play their game or maybe they know us who knows i mean game developers are very friendly but it feels so nice i want to participate in another game gym now i want to do it again let's find another game jam yes ok ok
so this is how our finished ludum dare 48 game looks like and even though development is always a bit of a bumpy road for one of the first times we actually managed to nail the difficulty and the length of the game and the overall reception of the game was pretty positive as well so we are definitely proud of what we created i need another game jim match my next cake this was too much fun i wanna do it again hey this is jonas and if you enjoyed this video please be so kind and check out my upcoming indie game will you snail on steam and tickle the wishlist button if you like what you see that would be massively appreciated because that way you'll get notified when the game comes out and you won't miss the launch thank you hi my name is the shelfman and i am actually the one that edited this video i would love to hear what you thought of it and if you have any feedback for me feel free to let me know and check out my own gamedev channel if you're interested in even more game death content
The game jam experience is characterized by a recurring cycle of ambitious ideation, technical friction, and eventual time-pressured development. These events, typically spanning 72 hours, involve small teams collaborating remotely to build a functional game from scratch. The process frequently begins with a desire to maintain a simple, manageable scope to ensure high-quality polish, but often devolves into "scope creep" as developers add complex features such as multiple enemy types, narrative cutscenes, and boss fights.
Technical challenges are a constant feature of this environment, particularly regarding version control and collaborative software. Teams often encounter significant setbacks due to synchronization errors, missing scripts, and platform-specific bugs, which consume valuable development time. These technical hurdles, combined with a tendency to prioritize excessive breaks during the early stages of the jam, frequently force teams into late-night "crunch" sessions to meet the submission deadline.
Despite the inherent stress, technical frustration, and the common realization that the final product may not align with initial creative visions, the process remains a popular and rewarding practice for independent developers. The cycle often concludes with a sense of accomplishment upon submission, regardless of the presence of bugs or gameplay limitations. Participants frequently report that the collaborative nature of the event and the positive reception from the developer community serve as primary motivators, encouraging them to repeat the experience in future jams. Ultimately, the game jam serves as a high-intensity learning environment that tests project management, rapid prototyping, and team communication under strict time constraints.
