Modern Times Group
Modern Times Group successfully executed its strategic transition from a traditional broadcaster to a digital video entertainment provider throughout 2016. The financial results for the fourth quarter reflect this shift, characterized by an 8% organic sales growth—the highest rate in over five years—and a 28% increase in profit. These gains were achieved despite significant capital allocation toward digital expansion, content acquisition, and the divestment of several profitable legacy assets. The company’s board proposed a dividend of SEK 12.00 per share, representing a 93% payout ratio, signaling confidence in the firm’s long-term value creation.
Operational performance across divisions remained robust, with Nordic Entertainment leading growth through strong subscription and pricing performance for the Viaplay service. International Entertainment achieved its highest quarterly profit to date, bolstered by strong free-to-air operations, particularly in Bulgaria. Meanwhile, MTG Studios benefited from high demand for drama and branded entertainment. Conversely, the MTGx division reported a higher EBIT loss, a direct result of accelerated investments into esports and a goodwill charge related to Zoomin. To further its digital footprint, the company acquired a 21% stake in InnoGames, with plans to increase this to a majority position.
The company remains on track with its cost transformation program, which realized approximately SEK 450 million in savings during 2016, with an additional SEK 100 million expected in 2017. Total estimated savings are projected to reach SEK 600 million. By exiting markets in the CIS region, Africa, and the Czech Republic, the organization has streamlined its portfolio to focus on core digital verticals. These results demonstrate a successful balancing of immediate profitability with the structural investments required to sustain growth in a rapidly evolving digital media landscape.
