Modern Times Group
Modern Times Group achieved record sales and digital growth during the third quarter of 2015, driven by increased viewing levels, healthy customer intake, and rising market shares. The organization’s primary objective centers on a large-scale digital transformation, supported by a SEK 1.2 billion investment in high-growth online video categories and the acquisition of key international sports rights. Despite significant currency headwinds and M&A-related costs, the group maintained profitability while initiating a restructuring program designed to improve operational efficiency and generate SEK 600 million in annual savings.
Performance across business segments remained robust. Free-TV Scandinavia reported record audience shares and increased sales, while the Nordic Pay-TV segment saw continued subscriber growth, particularly through the Viaplay platform. Emerging markets also showed positive momentum, with Free-TV operations in those regions achieving higher audience shares and reduced losses. The digital and content production segment, encompassing MTGx and Nice Entertainment, experienced top-line growth following the consolidation of new digital acquisitions, including Splay, Zoomin, and Turtle, all of which performed above initial expectations.
The financial results reflect a strategic shift toward digital-first business models. Organic digital revenue grew by 42% during the quarter, and the group successfully expanded its mini-pay subscription base to 138 million. While the company faced specific challenges, such as geopolitical instability in Ukraine and regulatory changes in Russia, the overall portfolio review and focus on digital expansion provided a buffer against traditional market volatility. By balancing programming investments with cost-saving measures, the group successfully navigated a complex macroeconomic environment to deliver stable margins and prepare for long-term digital scalability.
