Welcome, welcome, welcome. I'm going to warn you all that the internet is very bad today again. I have the internet [clears throat] fellas coming out to check and see what's going on with the internet. But, we'll see how long it lasts, okay? And see if it's uh going to work for us. Let me know if the stream gets kind of weird or is uh laggy or whatever. Um we're going to play three games today. One of them is called Rola, another one is called Zupe, and another one is called Isolated Island. And um I'm really excited about these games, honestly. Um they are hand-picked by me from my Twitter feed. Um so yeah, come on in, guys. Welcome, welcome, welcome. Let's see if that chat box will open properly. There it is. Hey, Shadow. How are you doing? Shadow Interactive, come on in. Cyber Rift, how you doing? Waffle Lot
JB Kaboom Okay, good. Um huge thank you, huge huge thank you really quick, guys, to PK, Mate, um Cat Katie, Readaban, Landon, and Benjamin. Uh these folks joined the massive full-time game dev sale, which is my massive course, which teaches you not only how to make indie games in Godot, or Unity, but also how to hit the Steam front page, how to get wish lists, how to reach out to publishers, how to do Kickstarter campaigns. The list goes on and on. It's a massive program. The end goal of this program is to be taught by an actual indie game developer who has gone full-time. I've gone full-time on three separate occasions, whether it was Kickstarter, whether it was publishers. And so yeah, I teach how to take a demo, basically. How to take an idea and turn it into a paycheck. But if that's not your
thing, if you just want to get wish lists, if you just want to hit the Steam front page, if you just want press coverage, you want to learn how to market your studio, check out full-time game dev below for the spring sale. This ends in, I guess, about a week here. In a week it ends. So check it out below. You're also going to get my 2D and 3D art pro program completely free. These are art programs taught by an actual indie game developer. So yeah, check it out. And if you don't trust me, I totally get it. I wouldn't trust a YouTuber either, if I'm being honest. So at least read the reviews here to see if it's something you're interested in. These uh students actually went full-time with the help of the course, which is really really cool. Um so check it out below, see if it's something you're interested in. All right, let's go ahead and jump into some games here. Um the first game is called uh Rola. I think that's how you say it, Rola. Let's take a look here. Okay, so the goal of these live streams, when we play Rola, and when we play the other games, is to not be hypercritical just for the sake
of being critical, but instead be thinking of how we can um how we can help these developers, how we can help them make the game better. So I'm going to be offering feedback. I also want you guys, if you can, to offer feedback in the chat for the developers, so that when they watch this, um they get some help and some constructive criticism. So let's hit play here and take a look. Good day. How you doing, Quincy? Tug Mac, how you doing? Come on in, come on in. I love how that just opened up. You don't see that a lot. You see a a nice faded splash, but it's really nice to have the game just start. All right, let's go. I'm going to turn it down a little bit. I like this menu. Give me some sounds here. Give me a sound there. Goals. Eat 100 humans, cause 500 damage, survive 120 seconds, Rola, collect the
letters. 150 times people eating combo, eat 200 Okay, so hopefully this will stay on screen when we're playing. Um somewhere in the Pacific, 1984. Let's go. Okay, controls. Uh-oh. Oh, okay, spacebar. Oh, yeah, okay, this It confused me a little bit. Um ASWD, spacebar is dash, special is left control. Okay. I kind of wish shift was dash. Nice. Okay. So what are my um goals here? I kind of wish my goals I could see them up the left-hand screen. Eat 100 humans, cause $500,000 of damage.
Okay, let's keep going here. Estimated damage, 96,000. Nice. So I'm like a giant turd. Oh, cool. Okay. So you shrink the more you get hit. It looks great, honestly. I think the the graphics are awesome. It's really really impressive. Oh my goodness, we've caused a ton of damage. Okay, I wish I could see my goals. Um I wish I could see them at the top of the screen when it occurs. Um I think that that would be very very helpful and make me feel like I'm rewarded. Right now, I don't really know Right now, let me turn this down a little bit.
Right now, I don't really know what I'm getting. I just feel like I'm just rolling. And so I think some two things here. Number one, I think giving the goals um a cool sound and then showing it up here at the top of the screen and making it sound really juicy uh and really financial, like it's you're getting paid to work. Um give me some kind of like cash register sound or something, I don't know. At the top left-hand screen when I get the achievement, okay? Or or or or beat the goal. And then also let me know how many goals I have left. So I kind of wish that I could see the goals at the top left-hand screen. I don't think you have to show them all, just show the one I got, and maybe say how many I have left. So maybe show like um one out of 10 goals completed or something. Also, it might be nice for me to see the goal that you want, you as the developer, you want me to do next, um at
the top left-hand screen, instead of pressing pause and then clicking goals. I think that's my primary concern so far with the with this game. It's the way that the goals are displayed and the way that the goals are rewarded. Do we agree? Um okay. Uh 150,000 people eating combo. Oh, 150 X people eating combo. I'm not quite sure how to do that, but let's keep going. Oh, there's a I think the combo. There we go. Oh, it's right there. Did I miss it? Okay, so I guess just make it more prominent. And give me a sound. Give me a sound when I get something. Okay? Have it appear at the top of the screen, really exciting. So the sound is a little bit um Let me think here. I think killing things I'm not really hearing the sound of
things dying yet. And I kind of wish I could hear that sound. Yeah, there's certain things like breaking up a building that I really want to hear.
[cough]
And I don't really hear those. I just hear the music. Oh, come on. Oh, no. I love how those fall. That's cool. No! What? I got destroyed. I love the pixel art style. I love the colors. Um really good color scheme here. Very precise in its coloring. Let's see where we are with our goals. Radio, radio, radio. I don't know what that that means.
Yeah, I don't really know what the radio, radio, radio is. Do you guys know? How's the stream going, guys? So far? Also, I wish I knew when I could sprint, cuz right now there's no indicator uh when I can dash. Okay, the radio tower. Okay. So I I just defeated the radio tower. Oh, no. Oh, no. Also, I wish I could see like a flash when I get hurt. I'm surprised this is running as well it is it as it is. I think this is kind of a a bit of an optimization marvel. I'm surprised. Okay, so did I get radio, radio? I did.
So now what? Hmm. How's the stream, guys? Is the stream falling apart here? Are you guys there? I killed I told you I told you the internet is trash today. Uh Sorry, guys. We will see if we can get it. Um let me know if the stream's okay, guys. Let me pull up the uh stream here. So that was Rola. The stream is pixel art.
[laughter]
Okay, the stream is back. Okay, good. So guys, that was Rola. Overall thoughts with Rola. I think it it's it's uh
got great polish. The art style is amazing. I love the art style. Uh music is good. The sounds overall are good. Um I think the game is suffering from a potential problem, which is I can't feel the loop. Um even though I'm achieving stuff, I don't know that I'm achieving stuff, and it could be that we need a hard and was what are we talking about earlier? I need a very strong visual that I got something or that I did something. I also need a goal, so I need to be able to see those goals, and I need to I need to know what my next goal is. Um I need to be given direction cuz cuz it's so easy to just roll around. Right? Um a lot of this has to do with just player feedback. Letting the player know that they're getting hurt, letting the know player know that they destroyed something, letting the player know that they got a
point, letting the player player know that they got Did I say this? They got hurt, that they beat a goal, all the things that we're achieving and that we're being um uh anything that's changing a variable in the game, I need to be told that as the player. So other than that, I think um yeah, I need a timer. I totally agree. I think a timer would be actually pretty cool. Um but overall, I think it's it's on track. It's on track. Isolated island after the flood. Let's hit play here and take a look. By the way, those of you just joining us, remember to check out the link below if you want to learn from a game developer who's been published on three separate occasions. That's me. Um I'm currently on my third commercial release. I've gone full-time three separate occasions, whether it was publishers or whether it was Kickstarter. Um I've learned how to not only uh you know, go go full-time with a demo, but also how to hit the Steam front page, get press coverage. Um yeah, so click the link below, check it out, see if it's something you're interested in, and learn how to not only make games,
but market them, and sell them. Okay, here we go. Great. Okay, it works. I love this menu. Wow. Good sounds. Okay, the UI developer here is very talented. Okay, arrow keys don't work. Just keep that in mind. They do need I'm not sure if that's legal, by the way. Is that a McDonald's sign? Great UI. This is awesome. Very good. This is super um crisp, and this is very low res. Uh so keep that in mind that this is this looks very unprofessional right here. That looks good. So this is this is just very low res right here. Um Give me a sec here.
Okay, sorry, guys. Great UI. I love it. Very um very professional UI, but again, low resolution there. Okay, let's keep taking a look here. All of this looks incredible, seriously. Um very professional menu. Okay. Padding looks good. Padding is very even across all sides. I don't love the logo, but um let's hit play and take a look. Freshwater is a vital resource
in an apocalyptic environment. Okay. Once you've gathered supplies from the shelter, build a ladder, and repair and repair to the cable. Wait. Oh, no. I couldn't read it. Let me let me let me um either either read me the dialogue with a voice actor or let me close that out cuz I missed it. Material required for building a ladder, wood log, and rope. Good. Metal fragments. Wow. This is pretty cool. I'd make that water more of a teal color to match I'll show you guys.
I can't. Yeah, I would make that water a a teal-er color cuz I feel like it looks a little off. Ooh, I got a rope. Let's build a ladder. This is this is teaching me really well. This is great. Oh, look, it's on a track here. So I'm not moving up or down or forward or back. I'm just moving left or right. That's cool. All right, let's let's go ahead and craft. Good indicator here. Good good sound, good game feel here. So I don't know how if I missed it or I wasn't reading in time, um I kind of have no idea what's where I am or who I am or what my goal is. Um maybe I missed it and I was I was texting somebody, but I I think that um
I I think that the any game, if you can throw in some kind of motive for the player, a goal, a destination, or show them what they can achieve and what they're trying to get to, you're going to get them to play longer. That's That's That's just my theory. Wooden table, materials required for making drift bottle gla- glass bottle one. Oh, it's a table. Okay. I can sleep. Thomas, did you abandon your game? What? No, I did a video about it yesterday. It's in beta testing. The game has been saved. Okay, so sleeping saves. Diary of a survivor, pick up. Avoid prolonged immersion in water. Cold seawater will rapidly deplete your stamina. Most zombies So with a zombie game, most zombies are active only at night. Returning to the shelter before 8:00 p.m. is wise. Only a madman would linger
outdoors after dark. Resting restores stamina. Chopping trees, mining, and picking locks all consume stamina. Adequate stamina increases the success rate of lock picking. Weapons of durability, so it's best to pack an extra one in your backpack before heading out. Okay. I would make sure that I can't pause during the the diary overlay. That's just me. Materials required for repairing the cable car, wood log one, a metal fragments. I'm trying to look for my inventory here.
Oh, tab. Okay, I've got fragments. I've got rope. I need to go find some wood. There it is. Got it. Good. Ooh, I could build a whole bridge. Let's go ahead and repair. I would make that just up or down. I wouldn't require pressing space, but that's just me. Well, that's salt water, Tuck Mac. Ching! Give me a sound there. Okay.
So, I could travel via That's kind of cool. I kind of love that. I wish I had a I saw a visual of it though. Well, there you go, Thomas. I love that. This is so interesting. I've never played like a I don't know. I've never played a game like this where it's a side scroller kind of open world vibe. Wait, I just punched something and there's blood. What? What am I punching? What did I just get? Give me a sound for that take all. Also, the sound is kind of off. Um I'm hearing the ocean right here. What I would prefer is as I move to the right the ocean water goes away and then I just hear the sound of wind
and grass blowing. A knife is needed to pick the lock. Give me some oil. Also, adjust the footsteps sounds. Right now, it sounds like I'm running on plastic. Okay. An axe is needed to collect metal. Okay. So, that sound is a little delayed there. It needs to be Right? We need to have it more reactive. I would actually just speed up the overhead attack. But, this is cool. I do like the the 3D and two dimension the 2.5D is really
cool. And if I was ever to make a 2D game again, I would definitely do it in 2.5D. Okay. Let's keep I'm sorry. I'm looking at all the visuals. I like the visuals. I think they're really cool. I kind of think the game needs music. Um like if I open up, let's say artlist.io. The water is a 2D sound and it definitely needs to be 3D. Um I feel like Let me Let me show you guys how to fix the atmosphere here cuz it's it's a little it's a little not great. So, give me just a sec here. And I don't know if this is because I'm just at the beginning of the game and there's no music and there's no real change. Um but um if we find no real change with the music or the sound, but let's go ahead and find um stormy wind grass. I'm looking up some sounds on artlist.io and I don't recommend using artlist.io. I've said it a million times, it's very
expensive. So, this is more dynamic. Right? It's not just a consistent over and over and over of the ocean. Listen. Okay? And now, let's go ahead and find an apocalyptic musical song uh atmospheric song. Okay. Moody horror atmosphere. Give me just a sec. I'm going to find a good one. Nope. We need an eerie
drone atmosphere. I'm looking. Hang tight, y'all. It's just so slow. Internet is so slow. Sorry. Yep. Here, I'm going to turn this down. Very dark. I don't know what's going on. I think it's getting night. Okay. So, that's the idea. Something like that. Um eerier music with more dynamic atmospheric sound could really help. Let's keep going though.
Go to our settings here. Turn our sound back up. Okay. Yeah, so the [snorts] the attacking is very unreactive. It just feels I'm clicking, but sometimes nothing happens. It's just very Everything feels very stiff. Yeah. Got it. We're going to need to speed that up. And I think there was no sound for getting hurt. And I can't see anything. Very very dark and there's no brightness adjustment.
So, we definitely want a brightness adjustment. It's I don't think. Let's see. Yeah, it's very dark. Can you guys see?
[groaning] [screaming]
Yeah, it's super dark. I can't see anything. I don't know where to go or what I'm doing. It's so dark. What in the world? I'm just I'm going to have to just wait until morning. I can't see a thing. Why is it that when I punch, I keep missing the head?
There's no hurt sound, so I don't really know when I'm getting hurt. Do they die? Yeah, there we go. Hm. It's hard to comment on anything cuz it's so dark. I can't see really where I'm going. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe I missed the torch.
Well, the the thing is is at the beginning of a game, whenever you're in the first 15 minutes of gameplay, you want to make sure that you um you hold the player's hand significantly cuz if I just pause out like I did and I and I was messing around with the sound, now I'm sort of lost a little bit. I died. Yeah, I died. Okay. Um Well, let's go back to that map. I love the weather system though. This is really cool.
Got a snack.
So, we got to be careful with that. The jump height of the box is a little too high, and so it doesn't feel good to jump on.
Right? So, we want to make sure we increase the jump height of the player or really that this game should be on a grid. Um even if it's a sort of open world vibe. Okay, so this is where I was. Let's break this box here. Metal fragments, good. Got some water. Got a first aid kit. Okay. So, yeah, definitely survival horror horror vibes here. Okay, I can eat a snack. Good, good, good. Okay, my health is at 100, so I shouldn't have done that, but hey. Just trying things out.
It's okay. Oh, that's cool. I love that. That's great. What happened? What? Oh.
[laughter]
Oh, no. What happened? Oh, no. I broke the game. I'm sorry. He's uh he's running like this. Sorry, guys. I'm just exploring here. Cool.
So, where's my crafting bench? I can't remember. Starting to get dark. So, I think you have to go back to your island when you're when you're done exploring. Is that the idea? How did that even happen? Oh my goodness, we have another one, 7th Avenue. Let's go to our shelter.
[laughter]
Tucked back. Okay, this is Okay, so this is where I can sleep. Um and I got my crafting bench here. Okay. Okay, so axe is
Give me a sec here. I'm sorry. I'm trying to figure out. Okay. Got it. Okay, I understand it now. All right, yay. So, I got my axe. And I can Can I equip it? Okay, so I'm holding it by default. I can't unequip it. Oop, don't do that, Thomas. Okay, let's go to sleep. Okay, I kind of understand it now. Um that we need to go back to to our island. Um but yeah. No, I think I think the elevator is kind of on like a track or something that connects various islands. Um Okay, so I've slept. That's good. I need some water, I think.
What does this mean? Wooden table. Materials required for making drift bottle. So, I can make a drift bottle at this crate wooden table, but what's the difference between that and this? Materials required for floor repair. I kind of wish that it wasn't just a wall of text. I wish it was just an icon, and it shows me wood four metal one. A wood icon and a metal icon. Right now, it's it's very wordy. And so, my brain is impatient. I'm feeling impatient, if I'm being honest. Okay, I got an axe, so that's cool. All right, guys, what do we want to do next?
Let's go back to the gas station and just make sure we got everything. Um but overall, I think I think the visuals are good. I think the sound generally is pretty good. It's very dry. Um I'm not in I'm not I'm not feeling a mood. I'm feeling just like ooh. It's gray. So, I think we need some music. Um I think we need some voice acting. Uh I think we might need a story, cuz right now I'm just sort of eh. I don't really have a motive. I don't really care about this guy. Um I'm not really interested in this world, because there's no stakes. That's weird. What's happening there? Okay, I got a snack. I'm hearing zombies.
Press and hold for split to split. Yeah, definitely need water to be 3D. Yay. I do enjoy this, by the way. I'm I'm having a good time. I think tonally it's a little dry. My arms are fixed though, so that's good. Let's see here. How's my axe doing? So, does my axe get damaged? I don't know. So, clicking is attacking. F is is chopping. Okay. That's a nice animation. Yeah, I totally agree, Alston. Oh, no. [screaming] Oh, no.
So, have you Have you guys noticed that the game even though yes, it is a survival horror game
[snorts]
um it feels very and and and survival horror games should feel slow and sluggish at sometimes. This game is pretty sluggish. Like in a way that bothers me. I guess what I'm saying is when I play games like Resident Evil 4 the player it feels tanky, right? The shooting is is precise. It has to be precise. But everything is very reactive and punchy. So, even things things are slow, when I press something, it happens. When I press forward, I move, right? When I press back, I move, even if I'm slow. When I pull that trigger, I fire. When I pull out my gun, it's quick. Right? But this is like everything feels just a little bit
laggy. Like when I press shift it takes a while to get started. And the way that you can resolve this without hurting the survival horror mechanics is with a sound. Right? Some kind of subtle sound letting me know that yes, Thomas, I know you pressed shift. Right? Of course, I don't think sprint is a thing here. Yeah, sprint isn't a thing. But even when I just move, right? There's like a a la- there's just a lag. And you can solve that with sounds. Let's say when when we click here yeah, that that sound is off. The sound is coming from behind my head. So, it should be And the reason why there's a sound here
is because I want to let the player know I hear you. I know you pressed a button. We're doing this. You want the player to know that something is happening. Let's go back to our uh camp before I die. That jump is very sluggish and slow. It gives me Morrowind vibes. It's like It should be
[cough]
This is all achieved with sound. It's achieved with particles. It's a tre- achieved with jump sound and land sound. All of this can add so much value to this game. If the player added music and worked on the juice and the reactivity of the mechanics and made them feel punchier and juicier and snappier, this game is solid. Right?
I would definitely give this game a story. All you got to do is let's let's talk about this really quick and then we'll move on to the next game. Let's talk about the the things that make stories interesting and make you want to play. Okay? So, let's go to our notepad here. I'm going to open up my notepad. There are a few things that can make this game give give me a motive. Okay? Number one, tell me if the player understands the world. Okay, let's change this to protagonist. Protagonist. Tell me how I'm supposed to feel because I want to relate to the protagonist, right? So, the way we do this is we say, "I just woke up from a coma. Where am I?"
Super cheesy, but at least we now know, okay, I don't know where I am or he looks at his he looks at his watch or something. "Day 1,050.
[sighs]
It's been 3 years since you died. When will this end?" Or let me think here. He What if he Give me time Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, he looks at his watch and he goes, "Day 355. It's almost been a year since the world exploded. Another day in the gray isles." You let us know. Okay, I know where I am. I know how long it's been this way. I know that I've been here for a while. So, I think that's called isekai principle or something. I can't remember. Let me know
if you if you as the protagonist understand the world. Okay? It's okay to give the protagonist a name. I can't write today. Give him a name. Okay? Watch this. We're going to do this for this, by the way. Let's do this for this game. Let's give him the name Samuel. Okay? Does he understand the world? No. He woke up wearing a gas mask. He says, "What? Where is my old neighborhood? My wife? Who put this mask on me?" You could even have a wise sage
call in on a radio. "You finally woke up, brother. Looks like my old doctor skills are coming into play. Good luck, brother." Always call him a unique name. Protagonist name is Samuel. Now, number three, give me a destination. What's the destination? The wise sage calls on the phone on the um radio. Listen. And let's put a little bit of urgency in here. We've got three nights until we run out of until uh your wife dies of the plague.
Go get the serum. How do you spell serum? Go get the serum. It's on island 66. Kshh. That's it. Oh my goodness, now I have a motive.
[clears throat]
You see your wife coughing on the bed next to you. She's comatose. Oh, now I have a motive and a goal and a destination. I know my name. I know uh that I don't understand this world. Um I know that there's this wise sage and who is this guy? Establish a very strong mystery. This is another one and the reason why is because when you have a very, very strong mystery, yes, I want to save my wife and I want to go find the serum on island 66, but I also want to get answers.
So, here's a strong mystery. There's a giant green pulsing egg. The man on the radio says, "Don't touch that. That came from outer space and I'm researching it. My goal is to find out what planet it came from and its purpose." Guys, these are really dumb tropes, right? Really silly, stupid tropes, but they work. They keep the player moving. Okay? Let's close the with that sound out. It's driving me crazy. Um these kind of games, survival horror
games, this stuff is so valuable for survival horror because survival horror games are slow, right? And they're kind of meticulous and you got to be thoughtful. They're very moody, right? Um tell me this world is truly dangerous. That's another one. Corpses. Dead bodies floating in the ocean. A crying child begging for his mommy. Right? You find your own dead child. All these things tell us that this world is brutal and dangerous. Okay? Does that make sense? Okay?
This is Yeah, and by the way, I I agree with you when you said that this is cheap. Um it's not a hero's journey, it's just story. I mean, that this is just the basics of story. Um very, very And make it make this unique. Zamuel. Okay? Number six, setting. Okay? This is so simple, but it's so important. Either tell me where we are or tell me we don't know at all. Okay? This is a little bit different than this one, right? I can say, "Who am I?
[sighs]
How did I end up here?" But I can still say, "We're off the coast of Wales." I can have the player go, "How did I end up here? Is this London?"
And I go, "Okay, I know I'm generally in London." Right? Um so, you can have the player the protagonist not know where they are and not know how they got there and not maybe know who they are, but you can still say, "Hey, it's London." Right? That's that's a um 28 Days Later, right? He wakes up, we know we're in London, but he's still confused. He doesn't know what happened, right? Um and it's obvious just by looking at his facial expressions. Um so, these are just a a few ways that we could make this story suddenly carry the player through an otherwise kind of repetitive task hunting game. It's totally fine to require the player to work and grind, but that grind and that working is exciting when you have this kind of stuff.
But Thomas, it's not a story game. Okay, but is it that hard to just throw this stuff in there? We don't need a ton of story to just create motive and setting and tell the player who they are and what they know and where they are. Does that make sense, guys? Do Do that make sense, guys? Okay. Very good. Very, very good. All right, I'm going to open up the next game here and um this will be the last game we play today and then we're going to vote on our favorite game and we're going to just talk about what made the games really good, what made them not so good. Um and then uh what we'll do is uh do a final Yeah, like I thought a final vote. So, this game is called Zupe. I saw this game on Twitter when an individual posted it below my um request for for playing games and I immediately I was was fascinated by the
the the the pixel art and the style. So, let's see see what it what we've got here. Welcome to Zupe, Shadows of Independence. The version you're about to play is a demo. This means that many features may change and new ones may be added in the future. Enjoyed it? Leave a review or wish list the game. Have fun. Oh, give me a sound. Give me a sound. There's sound there, that's good. Good sound there, good. Get I I I better hear a sound when I press start. Otherwise, I'm going to be disappointed. I don't love that that font's not pixelated. This looks awesome, by the way. I love that art style. And I love that thunder. Give me a sound. Okay, I heard a kind of a sound. It wasn't my favorite, though. Provincias Unidas del Rio, mm can't read that. The liberating revolution against the Spanish royals royalist forces was
at its peak defining one of the most decisive periods of the struggle for independence. I love history. I love this Battles and expeditions took place over several years with the goal of expelling the Spanish from the American continent. In the north, the General Martín Miguel de Güemes founded a military division of go I would give me some voice acting here. In 1821, Güemes was Los Infernales faded into the shadows. I I'll I'll tell you what I'm thinking here in a sec. Now, the demons of the war rise once again to torment them. Yes. Okay, so first off I didn't love the font. It was very big and chunky and it didn't have a pixelated feel to it. I kind of wish it did. You can you can bring so much value to this game by just having a Spanish
accent voice actor reading the lines like this. Reading the Spanish lines about the history of our world. Right? That would be so cool. I couldn't read that quickly. Number one, cuz I'm a dummy and I I really am so slow at reading. But number two, when I'm reading Spanish, I always sort of stumble. Right? It's a little dark looking. I know it's night but I would keep it bright but turn it blue. I can't quite figure out what I'm looking at here. Or what time of day it is here. Aw, I want to be able to kill that. Hey, compadre. These royalists be
burning down the village. I'm trying to do my my best with the accent here. Aid no shack left standing. They're hunting down internale in infernales. Infernals. Careful now, you're the last of them. Grab your old knife, you'll be needing it. I sound like a pirate. I know I know you don't crave no more fighting, but those bastards messed with our land.
[laughter]
There we go. Okay, good. I can break stuff. So FYI to the player or to the developer, if you give me this ability I I should see reaction all throughout the level. When I hit this, I need a blood splatter. When I hit this, I need a rock sound. Ching [laughter] sparks. Sparks sparks sparks. What you'll do is you need different material tags. You'd have blood, you'd have cactus
uh or just like par like a a greenish particle. You could call it vegetation. You could have stone, right? And just tag various colliders and when I hit them, I get a sound effect
[music]
and a particle effect. Very simple, very straightforward. Right now, it feels um like the world isn't reacting to me and that doesn't feel good. And by the way, that it's it's super important that you do this for the first 10 minutes of your game. Here we go. So, the particles for those barrels aren't pixelated and it really takes me out of the game. Yeah, re make the world more reactive. I wish I could hear sounds of my footsteps.
[laughter]
That That feels great. Oh, give me a death sound. You bastard. Give me blood splatter. So, this game is going to be amped up and amplified by juice. Juice all day long for a game like this. Okay, so the music sounds good. The The music sounds good, but I think that it doesn't sound like the situation I'm in. To me, it sounds like I'm in the in the in the middle of a happy town, right? Um and I just woke up and I'm going to go get some milk, some leche. Right? I would if it were me I would find a tense mysterious um guitar.
Snare. Like war snares. Like a war snare drum. One sec Let's find a good song. No. Give me a sec, I'm finding it.
This is kind of the idea, but just imagine it's Spanish. Okay? You want to feel like you're sneaking out, right? You're escaping.
[groaning]
So, let's go back here. We're getting there. I'm going to type in Spanish war. Let's see if I get some like cool Spanish war drums or something. No.
Latin acoustic. That's kind of close. I love this game. So, I don't like the vocals, obviously. So, hang on. We're about to find it. Latin acoustic
and see what we can find. Alexa, play Despacito.
[laughter]
Yeah. If Okay, so if this game had amps amps up its juice and and amps By amp up juice, I mean like crank up the sound, blood splatter, the sound of weapons falling on the ground. Um footsteps. The sound of the enemies. He's dead. Like all these different voices when they see the player, when they get hurt. Right? When the player when the player attacks. All those sounds can be organic. Just because it's pixelated doesn't mean we don't want it to be organic. We want everything to feel like it's made out of flesh and dirt and bones.
Give me some particle effects. Give me some breakables. Make everything in that world react to my sword hitting it. Otherwise, it just feels like a fake sword. It's a phantom sword. And then let's make that music. Nope. Let's do Latin or orchestral. The one we had was pretty cool. What? No, let's go to Epidemic. This this is terrible. Hold on. I'm going to go to Epidemic here and we're going to type in uh adventure. No. action
battle Latin No. You're not going to get anything really good on Epidemic. Let's type in adventure. Spain Yeah, there's not much on these websites, honestly. But yeah, like you could you could you could see it why it maybe some action or some some suspense music would be cool. This is pirate music, but that's the idea.
You hear that? Oh, they dead? Nice roll. I love that. Very reactive. Yeah, we need we need music that's more like suspenseful and and rhythmic intense I need some health. Cool. Yeah. I think that's a great Zupe is a great
game. Um it it has this uh It has the a lot of potential there. I I really do. I think there's a lot of potential there um for Zupe. Okay, so while we set up the vote, right? We're going to go ahead and vote for our favorite games here. While we do that one final shout-out to those of you who joined during the spring sale. Huge huge congratulations to PK Mate, Katie uh Readaband, Nikki Landon and Benjamin. Welcome to Full Time Game Dev. And by the way, guys, if you want to join Full Time Game Dev during [clears throat] the spring sale, check out the link below. The link is going to basically, well, take you to this page right here. And this page right here is showing that there's 7 days left to join Full Time Game Dev. So, if you want to join Full Time Game Dev, which is my massive course uh which teaches, you know, everything I've learned in the last decade of securing publisher deals, doing
Kickstarter campaigns, hitting the Steam front page, getting wishlists, making a game in Unity, or you can learn Godot or Unreal in the course as well. But you're also going to get my 2D art programs, my 3D art programs completely free. And look, you don't have to trust me and frankly, I wouldn't just trust me willy-nilly. I would I would look at reviews and see if people are actually finding the course helpful. If you're a student in the program, let me know what you think about it in the chat. Otherwise, you can just see them here. Here are some students who went full time with the help of the course, which is really really cool. I'm super duper proud of them. Okay, let's go ahead and set up the vote here, guys. The vote is about to be set up here. Okay, so let's see here. Let me see here. Okay, let's set up a poll. Okay, which game was best? It's as simple as that, ladies and gentlemen. Okay, we've got Zupe We've got
What was the other one? Isolated Island or Rola Okay? I'm going to start the poll. And as it rolls, I'm going to give a brief overview here of Rola. Rola, the issue with Rola was that I wasn't feeling like I was doing anything. The graphics were awesome. It felt really good to to look at. But I didn't feel like I was getting anything or achieving anything because the sound was getting washed out by the music. I want to hear
[laughter] [snorts]
as I'm rolling through this world and collecting things. Obviously, that can get annoying, so you got to be just you got to be strategic with it and careful with it. The things that really matter are those goals. When
I when I reach a goal, I want to hear I want to see Here's the new goal. Fades out. You collect it. Right? I want to see those goals constantly achieving.
[clears throat]
Um Isolated Island, I think this game has a lot of potential. I think that we need more reactive player animation. Yes, I understand that it's the it's a survival horror and survival horror can be tanky and slow. We still want reactivity. Even if I'm playing Dark Souls, it still feels reactive because when I press a button, I hear You're getting reaction even though the animation might be slow purposefully. And I don't quote me on that. I don't know if Dark Souls actually has a start sound. Um so yeah, mainly just sounds and
animations are not very reactive in Isolated Island. Um And then Zupe, same thing here, man. Crank up that juice. This is the juice This game could could If you just focused on juice for Zupe if [snorts] that's all you really focused on, you'd have I think a solid title. I think you would. Okay, my guess is that uh Zupe and Isolated Island are going to be tied-ish. What would that be? 40 and 40 and maybe Rola gets 20. Let's go ahead and take a look. 3 2 1 go. The poll is currently at Let's see. Zupe is at 54%. Isolated Island at 32 and then Rola is at 14. Sounds close. I think I was pretty close.
All right, guys. That was a lot of fun. Thank you so much for hanging out. I love you.
