GungHo Online Entertainment
GungHo Online Entertainment’s fiscal year 2018 financial results demonstrate a stabilization of the company’s performance, effectively halting a multi-year downward trend in sales. While annual net sales remained nearly flat at 92,101 million yen—a marginal 0.2% decline year-on-year—the company achieved a significant recovery in the fourth quarter. This turnaround was driven by the sustained engagement of the flagship title Puzzle & Dragons, which benefited from targeted events and collaborations, and the successful international expansion of Ragnarok M: Eternal Love through the subsidiary GRAVITY.
Despite the stabilization in top-line revenue, profitability faced downward pressure throughout the year. Operating income fell by 22.7% to 26,577 million yen, and the operating income margin contracted from 37.3% to 28.9%. This decline is primarily attributed to a shift in the revenue mix; the increased contribution from GRAVITY, which carries a higher cost of sales ratio, caused total cost of goods to rise by 19.2%. Selling, general, and administrative expenses remained relatively controlled, reflecting a strategic balance between maintaining marketing support for established titles and managing the launch costs of new games like YO-KAI WATCH WORLD and CHRONO MA:GIA.
The company’s operational focus remains on maximizing the long-term value of its existing portfolio through active user base management. Puzzle & Dragons continues to be a cornerstone of this strategy, with cumulative downloads in Japan surpassing 51 million as of January 2019. By leveraging recurring in-game events and cross-promotional activities, GungHo has successfully revitalized monthly active users. Looking forward, the company is prioritizing the global scaling of its publishing business, with Ragnarok M serving as a key growth engine across Southeast Asia, North America, South America, and Oceania, alongside ongoing preparations for its release in Japan.
