Devolver Digital
This represents a significant decline from the $6.8 million profit reported in the same period of 2022.
Devolver Digital’s financial results for the first half of 2023 reflect a period of contraction characterized by declining revenue and profit, alongside a strategic pivot regarding platform distribution. The company reported $43.87 million in revenue for the six-month period ending June 30, 2023, representing a 17.2% decrease year-over-year. Normalized gross profit fell by 50.5% to $9.39 million, and the company shifted from a $6.8 million profit in the same period of 2022 to a $3.5 million loss in normalized adjusted EBITDA.
The downturn is primarily attributed to a lighter release schedule, with only four titles launched in the first half of 2023 compared to seven in the prior year. Consequently, the company’s back catalog of 109 titles accounted for 87% of total revenue. While specific titles like Cult of the Lamb continued to exceed performance expectations, the overall back catalog experienced relative weakness compared to the previous year.
A central component of the company's current strategy is the intentional reduction of revenue from subscription services. Management has opted to decline various subscription deal proposals from major platform partners, citing a desire to protect the long-term value and revenue potential of its intellectual property. This trend of reduced subscription-based income is expected to persist through 2024. Moving forward, the company intends to prioritize the success of new releases by increasing investments in development, quality assurance, and marketing, even if this necessitates delaying titles to ensure they meet quality standards.
