Devolver Digital
The company recorded a $91.5 million pre-tax net loss, a reversal from the $30.6 million profit in 2021.
Devolver Digital’s 2022 fiscal year results reveal a period of significant financial volatility characterized by substantial revenue growth offset by a major net loss. While the company achieved annual revenue of $134.6 million, representing a 37.1% year-over-year increase, it reported a pre-tax net loss of $91.5 million. This contrasts sharply with the $30.6 million profit recorded in 2021 and triggered a 13% decline in share price to a record low of £0.28.
The financial downturn is attributed to several strategic factors, including the cancellation of specific titles, the restructuring of the Good Shepherd subsidiary, and impairments to intellectual property and goodwill. Additionally, gross profit margins contracted from 40% in 2021 to 34.4% in 2022, driven by increased marketing expenditures for major releases and higher amortization costs associated with new game launches. Despite these challenges, back catalog sales remained a stable contributor, rising 15% and accounting for 45% of total annual revenue.
Operational highlights for the year included the launch of 12 new titles, with Cult of the Lamb and Return to Monkey Island serving as primary revenue drivers. Looking forward, the company maintains a robust development pipeline with over 30 games scheduled for release before 2026. Management characterizes the 2022 results as a necessary "reset" to align with current market valuations, with a strategic focus on positioning the company for growth in 2024 and 2025. The publisher currently holds 11 first-party intellectual properties following the acquisition of Doinksoft.
