PC & Console Year in Review 2025

Alinea Analytics provides a comprehensive review of the PC and console gaming market for 2025, offering data-driven insights into player behavior, revenue trends, and regional growth. The analysis highlights a year defined by the continued rise of indie and "Triple-I" titles, which accounted for over 25% of Steam’s revenue. Major success stories like RimWorld’s Odyssey DLC, which earned $10 million to date, and the rapid development of viral hits like RV There Yet? underscore a market where high return on investment is increasingly decoupled from massive studio sizes. Geographically, the report identifies China as a dominant force, ranking as the top market for Steam and the fifth for PlayStation. This surge is attributed to the momentum of titles like Black Myth: Wukong, with Chinese players making up a significant percentage of the audience for games such as Escape from Duckov and Monster Hunter Wilds. In Europe, the Swedish development scene saw a massive year, capturing significant market share through titles like R.E.P.O. and Split Fiction. Technical and genre trends show Unreal Engine maintaining its position as the industry standard for AA and AAA development, while Unity remains the backbone for indie successes. Co-op games emerged as a primary revenue driver, representing 11 of the top 20 highest-grossing titles. While adventure and RPGs remain popular, "cute" and "realistic" tags saw the highest year-over-year revenue growth. The data also notes a shift in marketing dynamics: while wishlist campaigns are now standard—requiring nearly 200,000 wishlists to break the top 200 most-anticipated list—conversion rates have declined, placing greater emphasis on post-launch player reception and "shadow drops" for viral success.

PC/Console Gaming Index: A Look at the Top Games, Publishers, and Platforms in 2025 So Far

The 2025 PC and console landscape is dominated by Steam, which recorded 450 million downloads and is projected to achieve a record $12 billion in premium revenue, reflecting a 15 percent year‑to‑date increase. PlayStation and Xbox follow with 376 million and 283 million downloads respectively, underscoring Steam’s clear lead in both user acquisition and monetisation. Across the combined market, action titles command the highest demand at 262 million downloads, while shooters and role‑playing games attract 189 million and 131 million downloads, indicating a strong preference for high‑intensity, narrative‑driven experiences among gamers. Premium revenue accounts for the majority of earnings on the leading platforms, with Steam generating 79 percent of its income from premium sales and PlayStation reaching 83 percent, highlighting the continued viability of upfront purchase models despite the growth of free‑to‑play alternatives. The data suggest that while free‑to‑play titles remain a significant segment, the premium‑heavy ecosystem retains a decisive advantage in revenue generation. Overall, the findings illustrate a globally integrated market in 2025 where PC distribution via Steam outpaces console rivals, genre preferences skew toward action‑oriented titles, and premium monetisation continues to dominate the financial structure of the industry.

Cross-Platform Gaming: Bridging Mobile and PC/Console

The 2025 gaming landscape is defined by the convergence of mobile accessibility and PC/console depth. The primary thesis suggests that while mobile serves as a global discovery engine and a source of steady growth, PC and console platforms anchor brand prestige and high-value engagement. To maximize franchise value, publishers must strategically bridge these ecosystems through purposeful cross-platform design, turning mobile’s vast reach into lasting loyalty. Data highlights a significant scale disparity between platforms: mobile is projected to reach 52 billion downloads and $82 billion in in-app purchase revenue in 2025, while the PC and console segment generates over $12 billion from 1 billion units sold. Mobile leaders like Roblox and Garena Free Fire drive mass acquisition, whereas premium titles such as EA SPORTS FC 25 and Marvel Rivals dominate engagement on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox. The findings indicate that unified ecosystems, such as those used by Delta Force and Genshin Impact, strengthen retention by allowing players to switch devices without losing progress. The scope of the analysis is global, covering over 100 markets with specific digital advertising data from 14 major regions, including the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom. It focuses on the first three quarters of 2025, utilizing Sensor Tower’s proprietary App Performance, Video Game, and Pathmatics Advertising Insights. Methodology involves statistical sampling of digital ad placements and estimated revenue from the App Store and Google Play, excluding third-party Android stores and direct web payments. Four strategic models for expansion are identified: companion apps for engagement, "lite" versions for mass discovery, adapted standalone experiences for genre diversification, and full cross-play models for community unification. The conclusion emphasizes that a resilient portfolio must balance high-volume mobile genres, such as Simulation and Puzzle, with high-depth PC genres like RPGs and Shooters to maximize monetization efficiency and franchise longevity.

From Games to the Big Screen: The Impact of IP Across Platforms

The entertainment industry is increasingly leveraging a transmedia strategy where video game intellectual property serves as the foundation for high-budget scripted content. This approach creates a symbiotic relationship between platforms, where the release of films and television series triggers a boomerang effect that revitalizes interest in the original games. Data indicates that these adaptations drive significant growth across multiple metrics, including active users, digital downloads, and in-app purchases, while simultaneously boosting the performance of the streaming services hosting the content. The scope of this analysis covers major cross-platform releases between 2024 and 2025, focusing on global mobile, PC, and console gaming segments alongside digital advertising and streaming app performance. Key findings highlight the success of the Minecraft movie, which grossed over $900 million and led to a 44% spike in mobile in-app revenue and a 36% increase in console sales. Similarly, the Fallout television series drove a 23% increase in Amazon Prime Video downloads and a massive 410% surge in daily sales for Fallout 4 on PC. The longevity of this impact is notable, with daily active users for legacy Fallout titles remaining 225% higher for up to 20 weeks following the show's premiere. Methodology relies on proprietary data from Sensor Tower, tracking digital market insights, app usage, and advertising spend. The data reveals that strategic marketing is essential to this success; for instance, Amazon increased its desktop video ad spend twentyfold to promote Fallout, specifically targeting gaming-focused platforms like Twitch and IGN. While results vary based on the faithfulness of the adaptation and the monetization model of the game, the overarching trend suggests that transmedia releases are a powerful tool for re-engaging historical players and attracting new audiences to established gaming franchises.

Crypto on Live Streaming Mini‑Report

This analysis examines the intersection of cryptocurrency and live streaming, tracking the rapid growth of digital asset content across Twitch, YouTube, and Kick. The primary thesis identifies a significant surge in crypto-related broadcasting driven by market speculation, memecoin popularity, and political events. The scope covers global data from July 2023 through June 2025, utilizing a methodology that tracks unique channels with at least 30 hours of monthly airtime while excluding bots and suspicious accounts to ensure data integrity. Findings reveal that the number of unique channels streaming crypto content doubled in the six months leading into late 2024. YouTube experienced the most dramatic growth, rising from 31 channels in July 2024 to over 200 by June 2025. Viewership peaked across platforms in early 2025, with Twitch reaching its height in February and YouTube seeing major spikes in January and June. While Bitcoin remains the most discussed asset with over 500,000 chat mentions in the first half of 2025, Solana has emerged as a dominant secondary interest, recording 171,000 mentions—triple that of Cardano. The geographic reach of this content is notably diverse, with India emerging as a major hub; four of the top ten crypto creators are based there and stream primarily on YouTube. K1m6a is identified as the leading creator with 6.7 million hours watched. Beyond dedicated finance streams, crypto discourse has permeated gaming communities. Just Chatting is the top category for crypto mentions, but Escape from Tarkov and Fortnite lead among gaming titles. Furthermore, crypto integration is deepening in professional gaming, evidenced by high-viewership esports events like the 2025 Mid-Season Invitational, which secured major crypto-related sponsorships.

Tools & Services Survey: November 2024

This analysis examines the evolving landscape of game development tools and services amidst a period of significant market volatility. Based on a November 2024 survey of the Game Developer Collective, the findings track shifts in engine preference, cloud infrastructure, and overall industry sentiment. The survey includes a global sample of developers, with 48% based in North America and 39% in Europe, primarily representing roles in programming, management, and game design. A primary focus is the game engine market, which continues to react to Unity’s 2023 "runtime fee" controversy. Despite Unity eventually scrapping the fee, the company has steadily lost market share to Unreal Engine. While the percentage of Unity users planning to switch engines dropped from a peak of 70% in late 2023 to 36% in late 2024, this remains significantly higher than the 14% switch rate seen among users of competing engines. Sentiment toward Unity has moderated, but only 30% of developers report being happy with the company, suggesting a lasting impact on brand trust. The broader industry environment is characterized by increasing financial pressure and underperformance. Approximately 55% of developers now describe market conditions as "bad," a notable increase from 47% six months prior. Business performance has also declined, with 41% of studios reporting they are underperforming against expectations. Consequently, while investment in tools remains steady for most, there is a growing emphasis on productivity and efficiency as the primary drivers for new purchases. AI-powered tools are a rare area of growth, with studios more likely to increase spending in this category compared to traditional services. In specialized segments, Blender has emerged as the leading 3D modeling tool, used by 50% of studios. Cloud platform usage is at an all-time high, led by AWS and non-hyperscaler options, though these services remain highly "sticky" with low intent to switch providers. Conversely, specialist backend platforms struggle with low penetration, as only 38% of studios currently utilize these centralized solutions. Overall, the findings depict a cautious industry prioritizing efficiency and stability while navigating a difficult commercial climate.

Console/PC Games Investment Report September 2024

The analysis presents a comprehensive review of investment and merger‑and‑acquisition activity within the console and PC video‑game sector for the 2023 fiscal year, positioning 2023 as an outlier driven primarily by Microsoft’s $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Total deal value reached $69.5 billion across 200 transactions, a 612 % increase in value yet a 25 % decline in transaction count compared with 2022, and twice the combined value of the preceding five‑year period (2018‑2022). Investment volume fell to $627.8 million across 161 deals, while M&A volume surged to $68.8 billion in 39 deals, accounting for more than 99 % of North American M&A value. IPO activity contracted sharply, with six offerings generating $46 million in market capitalisation, down 85 % from the prior year. Geographically, North America and Europe dominated private investment, contributing $184.7 million (29 % of volume) and $358.8 million (57 % of volume) respectively, while Australia and New Zealand saw limited activity aside from a government grant program. Investors favored micro‑studios (median six employees), whereas acquirers targeted slightly larger teams (median 39 employees). Blockchain‑related deals comprised 15 % of investment value but only 13 % of transaction count, highlighted by Mythic Protocol’s $6.5 million seed round. Methodologically, the review counts only closed transactions, excluding announced deals, and treats SPAC proceeds as the investment amount rather than post‑transaction valuation. Data are drawn from a proprietary, sixteen‑year‑old database that tracks Western‑focused game‑industry deals across development, publishing, and technology, ensuring consistency and comparability across quarters. The findings underscore a market concentrated around a few mega‑deals, with modest activity elsewhere and a clear shift toward larger, strategic acquisitions.

How to Master Europe’s Digital Infrastructure Needs?

Video Games Europe argues that Europe’s digital infrastructure policy should reinforce, rather than reshape, the existing market dynamics that underpin the continent’s thriving video‑game ecosystem. Representing roughly 110 000 employees and a €24.5 billion industry in which 53 percent of Europeans play, the association stresses that the sector’s growth is driven by digital distribution, which already reduces the environmental burden of physical media and, in many cases, relies on cloud delivery to limit data transfer. Typical online gameplay consumes between 60 and 80 megabytes per hour, with even the most data‑intensive titles rarely exceeding 250–300 megabytes, a fraction of the traffic generated by video streaming services. The response highlights that network operators successfully managed the surge in traffic during the COVID‑19 lockdowns and that game publishers have collaborated with ISPs and content‑delivery networks to smooth peak loads through measures such as off‑peak download scheduling. It refutes claims that content providers “free‑ride” on ISP infrastructure, noting that publishers already pay for enhanced upload capacity and invest in their own CDN and data‑centre assets. Consequently, the relationship between content and application providers and ISPs is portrayed as symbiotic, fostering competition and consumer choice. Against proposals to impose network fees or extend the European Electronic Communications Code to cloud services, the association warns that such pre‑emptive regulation could undermine net neutrality, increase consumer prices, and jeopardise Europe’s digital competitiveness. It calls for regulatory stability to protect investment security and urges that any infrastructure deployment be guided by concrete market demand rather than aspirational targets. The position draws on industry data, BEREC assessments of network resilience, and the sector’s own mitigation practices, concluding that preserving the current regulatory framework will best support sustainable growth and innovation across Europe’s digital economy.

Transparent and Fair Purchases of In-Game Content

The initiative seeks to ensure that European players can make informed, transparent decisions when purchasing in‑game content, while safeguarding minors from unintended spending. It builds on the PEGI Age Rating System, now operating in forty countries, and introduces a three‑part policy framework: the PEGI Code of Conduct for purchasable content, additional safeguards focused on younger players, and coordinated information campaigns supported by trusted data. Statistical evidence shows that 20.8 % of all games receiving a PEGI rating include in‑game purchase options, with 3 % offering paid random items such as loot boxes. An annual Ipsos survey commissioned by Video Games Europe from 2018 to 2024, covering the five largest European consumer‑spend markets, reveals that parental supervision remains high—95 % of Swedish parents monitor spending—and that 76 % of parents report their children do not make in‑game purchases, a figure stable since 2020. Average spend among permitted purchasers fell 21 % in the Netherlands since 2023, and only 11 % of players aged 11‑64 have bought in‑game currency across the surveyed regions. The PEGI Code of Conduct obliges signatories to display a dedicated icon at the point of purchase, provide receipts, and clearly state the real‑world cost of any virtual currency. For paid random items, it mandates visible notices, confirms that such purchases are optional, and requires transparent probability disclosures in line with data‑protection laws. Additional safeguards include parental tools that default to zero spending for child accounts, separation of transaction interfaces from gameplay, and refund mechanisms for unauthorized purchases. Policies also prohibit the use of in‑game assets for illegal gambling or unauthorised trading, with enforcement powers vested in the PEGI Enforcement Committee. Information campaigns, such as the Pan‑European “Seize the Controls” effort, aim to raise awareness of these tools and safeguards in national languages, leveraging partnerships with Safer Internet Centres and other stakeholders. The industry welcomes further support from EU institutions and member states to amplify outreach and reinforce responsible spending practices across the European gaming ecosystem.

The State of Play: Summer 2024 Edition

The summer 2024 Xsolla analysis argues that the game‑development ecosystem has entered a phase of unprecedented democratization, driven by low‑cost engines, open‑source tools and third‑party services that lower technical and financial barriers for creators. Unity now powers 38 % of developers, up eight percent year‑over‑year, while Unreal enjoys a ten‑percent growth and Godot records a 69 % surge. More than 40 % of indie studios rely on five or more premade asset packages, and cross‑platform toolchains enable a quarter of developers to launch on PC, console and mobile, reaching the 60 % of players who game across multiple devices. Indie titles generate 29 % of Steam revenue in 2023, up from 25 % in 2018, and the average in‑house backend spend of $21 million is reduced through services such as Xsolla. Emerging studios continue to view market entry as challenging, emphasizing the need for health‑focused initiatives and localized support networks, exemplified by growing ecosystems in regions such as Wisconsin. Gender‑specific preferences reveal that women developers prioritize completion, fantasy and design elements, underscoring the importance of inclusive design considerations. The edutainment segment is projected to expand at a 65‑75 % compound annual growth rate through 2034, with the global MOOC market expected to reach $279.3 billion and 1.12 billion participants by 2029; the United States alone accounts for $87.5 billion in 2024. Concurrently, influencer

The Ultimate Game Hype Tracking Guide

This guide provides a framework for tracking game performance through the purchase funnel, emphasizing the importance of monitoring consumer sentiment from the pre-launch phase through the post-release lifecycle. The primary thesis is that success in the competitive PC and console gaming market requires a data-driven understanding of player awareness, purchase intent, and demographic behavior. By benchmarking these metrics against competitors, developers can optimize marketing spend, identify target audiences, and sustain long-term engagement. The analysis relies on data from the Game Health Tracker, which surveys over 3,000 PC and console players in the United States monthly. Key metrics include unaided awareness, which measures spontaneous brand recall, and aided awareness, which gauges maximum reach through prompted recognition. The findings demonstrate that awareness often fluctuates based on major industry events, such as trailer releases or gameplay reveals. Furthermore, the conversion rate—defined as the percentage of aided-aware players who express purchase intent—serves as a critical indicator of marketing effectiveness. The research highlights that demographic profiling and channel analysis are essential for resource allocation. For example, data shows that younger players may be more effectively reached through specific social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat, whereas older or different segments might prioritize online stores or gaming subscriptions. Post-release, the guide notes that awareness naturally plateaus, necessitating tactical interventions such as price drops, DLC releases, or content updates to re-engage potential buyers. Ultimately, the document concludes that while initial hype is valuable, sustained success depends on continuously monitoring the purchase funnel and adapting strategies to meet the evolving motivations of both primary and secondary player audiences.
