Mobile Dev Memo
The public markets reacted negatively to Glu Mobile’s Q3 2013 earnings, resulting in a 14% decline in share price despite the company exceeding revenue guidance. The primary driver of this market punishment was extreme revenue concentration, as the company’s performance became disproportionately reliant on a single new title, Deer Hunter 2014. While the company reported $21.3 million in non-GAAP smartphone revenue and beat earnings expectations, the market penalized the firm for the underlying instability of its growth model.
Data from the period indicates that while Glu’s five largest titles accounted for 54% of total revenue, Deer Hunter 2014 alone generated 12% of total smartphone revenue in just 14 days of availability. When normalized, this title represented nearly half of the company’s daily revenue for the remainder of the quarter. Furthermore, the company’s marketing expenditures reached $5.36 million, nearly double the revenue generated by the hit title, suggesting that the growth was heavily subsidized by aggressive acquisition spending rather than organic, sustainable portfolio performance.
The analysis concludes that public markets operate under a paradox for free-to-play gaming companies, where only "astronomical" hits that shift aggregate revenue by an order of magnitude are rewarded. Because Deer Hunter 2014 merely doubled daily revenue rather than fundamentally altering the company’s long-term financial trajectory, investors viewed the result as a "lesser hit." This highlights the inherent risks for publicly traded developers that rely on hit-driven portfolios, as the market demands transformative growth to justify the high marketing costs and operational volatility associated with the free-to-play business model.
