Steam Early Access Games: Reach and Update Frequency

The Steam Early Access program serves as a viable development pathway for the majority of projects, contradicting long-standing perceptions that the model is primarily a vehicle for abandoned or unfinished software.

• Of the 10,141 Steam games with at least ten reviews that entered Early Access between 2013 and 2023, 61% successfully reached full release by September 2026.
• Success rates correlate strongly with community engagement: 79% of games with 1,000 or more reviews reached full release, compared to only 31% of games with fewer than ten reviews.
• As of September 2026, nearly 7,000 Early Access games on Steam are flagged as having received no updates for over a year, representing more than half of the 12,320 total titles currently in the program.
