What percentage of game developers use AI during game development?

AI answer from the Game Industry Library · 20 sources · 10 Oct 2026

The most recent library figures put generative AI use among game developers at 36% personally using the tools (GDC, 2025 data) while Google Cloud's 2025 research reports 90% of developers already using some form of AI in their workflows — a gap that turns almost entirely on how each survey defines "using AI."

The 2025–2026 picture. GDC's 2025 survey reports that "a majority (52%) of developers work at companies where Generative AI tools are being used," with "One-third (36%) of developers say they use them personally, up from 31% last year"59. The same survey found "Almost two-thirds (64%) of developers say they work at companies with some form of internal policy for Generative AI use, up from 51% in 2024. That amount increases to 78% for developers at AAA studios"1255.

The high-end figures. Google Cloud's 2025 research states "An overwhelming 90% of developers are already using some form of AI in their game development workflows"83, and a separate release reports "87% of videogame developers are using artificial intelligence agents to streamline and automate tasks"92. A Reddit summary of the same study notes "Around 44% of developers use agents to optimize content and process information such as text, voice, code, audio and video rapidly"81.

The low-end figures. Game Developer reports "36 percent of game industry professionals are using generative AI tools as part of their job. Half of them, however, think the technology is" bad for the industry85. Statista's topic page gives the same headline: "Share of game developers whose studios or departments are currently using GenAI 36%"93.

Why the numbers diverge

Definition of "AI." The 90%/87% figures count AI agents and any form of AI in a workflow8388, while the 36% figure counts generative AI tools specifically598593.

Survey population. GDC's sample is a developer-conference audience; the Game Production Alchemist notes "the GDC sample skews US-based, white and male, and GDC says so itself. It is not the whole world. Japanese studios, for one, report far higher adoption"5674.

Regional variation. In the Netherlands, "Of all relevant companies (meaning they actually write code) about 46% are currently using some form of genAI coding assist, with another 19% considering it"5875. The Dutch report also contrasts perceptions: "Unity's latest report claims 79% of developers have a positive outlook on generative AI, while the latest survey among GDC-attendees indicates only 31% actually uses these tools"14.

Declining interest in content creation. Konvoy's Game Developer Survey 2025 reports "AI: declining interest in use for content creation," with a "-7% average decline in interest" among studios of ≤50 employees and "-5% average decline" among those with >51 employees6.

The InGameJob & Values Value survey summarises: "AI adoption is highest among analytics (97%), C-level executives (90%), and HR (89%), where automation and strategic planning play a major role... Lowest engagement comes from art (43%) and QA (37%), where up to 24% don't plan to use AI at all"23. GDC 2024 found "Developers at indie studios were most likely to use Generative AI tools, with 37% reporting that they are personally making use of the technology (compared to 21% of developers at AAA and AA studios)"57.

What developers actually use AI for

By task (GDC 2026 survey, 2,300 developers). "Eighty-one percent of the developers who use AI use it for research and brainstorming. Thirty-five percent for prototyping. Asset generation comes in at 19%, and only 5% will put it anywhere near a player-facing feature"7.

By task (Room 8 Group, 2025). "The top three areas where AI is being applied are enhancing animations (46%), automating code writing (37%), and generating art and levels (36%)"13.

By task (Dutch developers, 2025). Code during production, in-game: 48% using, 19% considering; code prototyping: 46% using; writing concept: 44%; art concept: 43%; game design: 42%; localization: 35%; QA automated testing: 13% using, 48% considering10.

By task (Steam disclosures). "Most genAI Steam games use AI in one of four different areas... including visual asset generation (about 60% of all disclosures), audio generation, text and narrative generation, marketing & promotional materials, and code & game logic"2765.

Personal code assistance. Game Studio Unlocked reports "code assistance at 47% of personal-use cases"16.

Sentiment is moving in the opposite direction

The share of developers who think generative AI is bad for the industry "went 18% in 2024, 30% in 2025, 52% now... It tripled in two years and crossed into the majority. Only 7% call it positive"756. GDC's 2025 data records "13% believe AI will bring positive changes (vs. 21% last year). 30% are confident that changes due to AI will be negative (vs. 18% last year)"17.

Player sentiment is similarly negative: Quantic Foundry "surveyed nearly 1,800 gamers in the last quarter of 2025 and found 85 percent held a below neutral attitude toward generative AI in games, with 63 percent picking the most negative option on offer"64. On Steam, "only 17% of respondents believing game devs are fully disclosing all audiovisual AI use in games"26.

Steam disclosure data (2025–2026)

"7,818 titles on Steam [disclose GenAI usage]. That's 7% of the total Steam library (there are now around 114,126 titles). We've octupled last year's figure! In fact, a little under 20% of all games released in 2025 have disclosed such use"27. BCG's analysis found "~7,300 Games on Steam reporting use of GenAI," with "Approximately one-fifth of titles released in Q3 2025 disclosed AI integration"1822.

On commercial outcomes: "AI-disclosed games are now roughly a third of new Steam releases, but they capture somewhere between 10 and 27 percent of estimated sales in that window, up from 3 to 6 percent in 2024"25.

Gaps in coverage

The available sources do not provide a single agreed denominator for "game developers" — some surveys count individuals, others studios or departments, and none of the provided sources reconcile the 36% and 90% figures directly. The sources also do not break adoption down by studio size beyond the indie/AAA split, nor do they provide a consistent global (non-Western) adoption rate; the only regional caveat offered is that "Japanese studios, for one, report far higher adoption"5674.
