Console ecosystems are significantly more top-heavy than PC, with the top 100 titles accounting for 84% of daily active users (DAU) on PlayStation and 76% on Xbox, compared to less than 60% on Steam.
Achieving commercial success is substantially harder on consoles, where in 2024, only 2.6% of new Xbox releases, under 5% of PlayStation releases, and 1.25% of Nintendo Switch eShop titles surpassed 100,000 lifetime units.
Steam remains a more viable environment for smaller developers, hosting 233 titles that exceeded 100,000 units in 2024, with the majority of these successes being original intellectual property.
The high concentration of DAU on consoles is primarily driven by entrenched live service games and annual sports franchises, which create significant barriers to entry for new intellectual property.
While console platforms remain functional for high-profile hits, their structural market dynamics favor established titles over the niche diversity and broader engagement found on PC.
